BNIB "Z" Serial concerns?

Folks,

Found a BNIB "Z" serial TT GMT from a great seller at the right price.

This watch was produced, if I can trust the guides, nearly five years ago.

Should I consider it as needing a service day one? Any concerns?

I'm specifically looking for concerns about buying a new five year old GMT.

THANKS

I wouldn't be too concerned. I would give it a 'swirl' to get it started, wind it fully and monitor the timekeeping for the next few days. My Z GMT need to wear in for about a month then settled down to about 11 seconds/month.

I agree with Bill (East Bay Rider). Yes the watch will require a service one day, but I think that day is still a few years away. You'll probably be able to enjoy at least 4-5 years' use before servicing becomes a consideration.

Yeah, with the oils used today I think you have a few years yet.

Just as a point, you really can't trust the guides when it comes to the TT and 18ct models. Series overlap, cases can sit in Rolex inventories for extended periods of time before being assembled, there really is no way of knowing when the watch was completed or shipped to the AD. There were still plenty of Z-serials coming through for several months after I first started at the shop, and I started in September 2007. I believe that the guides have gone from being seen as rough estimates to being canonical, which is very worrying due to their inherent weaknesses.

Have to agree far to much enthuses is put on these Internet codes. All you could tell from say the Z case stamp, was that the case was stamped sometime between May 2006 and approx Aug 2007.Now when the movement was made in the case well only Rolex knows that one.And movements are not made to the day, week, month, or year with movements like the cal 3135.And with modern oils not a problem if watch is stored for 3-5 years or more.

Charts are for researching a watch when you have no other information..

You cannot actually "date" a watch using a chart, but only get an approximation within a few years...

So, no... you don't trust a guide when you are at a shop with a BNIB watch in your hand..

Your BNIB watch becomes a data point on the larger charts that show the actual spread of a serial prefix... i.e., over several years...

Congrats on the purchase, you'll have a few years to enjoy it before service is needed!

Z could also be the second half of 2007, making it 3.5 years old. GMTIIC TT is one fine watch!
