What is it about the 1680 sub?
I've owned a 1680 sub with the submariner written in red letters for about 33 years and it has been my favorite daily wearer. I've always liked it even when looking at new ones. It's been a very rugged watch and has given me no trouble and I've currently have it in service where they are cleaning, lubricating, polishing and replacing a couple of worn out parts.
But until I started reading this forum and looking for a new watch, I didn't realize that there was an appreciation of these older watches. What is it about the 1680 design that is appreciated after all these years? Is there a reason to keep it in light of all the newer watches with their improvements? Or is it just a nostalgia thing? I have a lot of nostalgic feelings about this watch that don't neccessarily have to do with the watch itself, but I'm drawn to these newer watches also. Kevin |

LOL! Let me think..... The 1680 represents the last of a breed. The last matt dial acryllic with a date. It's truly a classice "tool watch" with the heart of a lion. The 1575 movement has been called a monster of over engineering, built to take a tremondous amount of abuse. I know the 3xxx fast beat movements are supposed to be smoother with a greater accuracy potential, but the 15xx engines take a back seat to nothing IMO.
That the 1680 was only issued with a matt non WG surround dial and a unique crystal sets it apart from the rest. I find because of it light weight as compared to It's more modern brethern the 1680 is one of the most comfortable watches offered by Rolex. With a date feature that appears a bit larger than the normal cyclops because of the tall crystal the 1680 is the easiest date feature watch to read, and of course, the vintage "open" numerals are a plus! Of course there is that little splash of RED!, but whether RED or WHITE the 1680 is a forever classic and one of the watches the Rolex legacy was built on. |

This board is becoming a great learning experience for me. I'm impressed not only by the extent of knowledge I'm finding here, but the photography is unbelievable...far above what I would have imagined.
I really never thought that anyone would have paid much attention to an old watch like my sub, but it is nice to think that even though it is old, there still exists something special about it. It's always been special to me, well, because it feels like I've always had it. I mean, how many things follow you through life like a watch? It has been with me through teen years and marriage, it was there at the birth of my daughters and when I said good byes at funerals. It has always been present, ticking away with its little mechanical heartbeart, marking with amazing accuracy our passage through the universe. Now tell me, what is more magic than that? Kevin |

The 1680 was also the FIRST sub to have the date function.
Great watch Kevin. Quite collectable as well as valuable. Did you buy it brand new, and please tell me you have all the original boxes, booklets and guarantee. This is just another excuse for me to show off my 1680. John. |
