Disappointed - found a crystal scratch
 I can’t believe it I found a scratch on my one year old DSSD crystal… my 20 year old Omega Seamaster perfect no scratches… anyone else have this experience with scratches on your crystal?

Not on my Rolex, but on other watches, so I kind of know the feeling. I believe there are only a few types of minerals that can scratch these crystals. I did read up on it once about 15 years ago. I had a nice vintage divers watch from the '60s my uncle had given me. It got scratched when I bumped up against a concrete column while on a construction jobsite review. One of the mineral compounds in concrete is one of the few things that scratch watch crystals is what I remember reading at the time. So sorry to hear about this.

I can't handle a scratch on my crystals. It's like a sharp stick in the eye every time I look at it.
Scratches elsewhere, no problem. Sapphire crystals aren't cheap. The one on my DJ for instance is just over $200, but it'd be worth that if I did scratch it. Sometimes stuff just happens and you have to deal with it.

I had a chip on my crystal and simply replaced it at service (authentic parts only). For me, it was easily worth the $170 I paid. And just knowing I could easily replace the part at any time made the pain go away.

You can remove the scratch from the sapphire using the diamond lapping past.
In 10 minutes work it will be new again ! Ciao Engi |

 Are Rolex crystals not as 'tough' as other brands. In 16 years of wearing my tag heuer daily and always on my wrist: (showers, swimming, sleeping, everything) it still hasnt got a single scratch on it, but alot of people seem to scratch the Rolex crystals??

 I chipped the edge of the cyclops on my Sub when it was two days old: Fortunately, you have to look hard to see it, so it doesn't really bother me that much. I can feel it with my fingernail easier than i can see it.

Rolex sapphire crystal is supposed to have Moh's hardness of 9. (Diamond is 10) It is very brittle. It can chip easily with a sharp blow. Except in extreme circumstances, it is impervious to scratches and striations.
Some people seem to think Rolex and/or Omega are indestructible. Truth is they are not. Water resistance is their forte, but bangs and drops? NOoooo wear a G shock instead if you are working manually. |
