Daytonas

While on a trip (again), I visited one of my best friends/AD, from which I have bought over 10 tiempieces in the last years. I was nicely suprised with the selection he had in stock but something was funny....there was no (not even one) Daytona...so I asked. his answer: Rolex has not shipped ANY daytona in the last 4 months, not even 2T or gold; he even has already sold (with money down) 3 daytonas (2T, nothing fancy) and placed the order with Rolex, no watches yet. He has been receiving every other model, but no crhonographs that sounds odd, doesn't it?

If any of you are looking for SS Daytona. My local AD has 2 white face and 2 black face SS Daytonas. He's selling it for $12,500.

I don't know how he got so many but the manager was telling me they received 45 SS Daytonas last year whereas some AD only get 1-2 a year. It's crazy! He also mentioned he's on the Top 10 seller of Rolexes in the USA just behind the AD at Wynn's Casino and Torneau in Las Vegas.

So these assholes get tons of SS Daytonas and then they turn around and try and rape the Rolex public that is patiently waiting for them!? Baaah! Jerks. $12,500!? They should have thier AD withdrawn from Rolex!

I suppose you can look at your AD's dilemma a number of different ways, but I was wondering if you are implying that this delay could be signalling a model change is coming? How long has the current model been in production, I wonder?

Otherwise, I don't really get the Daytona phenomina. I've never understood why Rolex keeps production so low most customers who want one have to put themselves on a waiting list to buy it instead of just increasing production enough to allow them to walk out of the store with one. If this were PP or a company like that, I would understand, because PP is all about "exclusivity". Rolex though makes, what, around 800,000 watches a year, which they always sell out, a major accomplishment certainly, but I would classify them as more of a basic luxury watch rather than a manufacturer of exclusive lines and rare, one of a kind models. I just don't get it, I guess.

ADs selling the Rolex $4500 above MSRP, thats disgusting and simply duping the public
Rolex being aware of this is not doing any thing thts really sad.

Rolex is just maintaining the hype for their SS daytona as people are giving them favorable responses by owning the SS daytona above the MSRP and also thts why Ads dare to sell them upto $5000 above MSRP

I guess the only way to rationalise it is that most "manufactures" would love to have a product that is "desired" and "on a wait list". I can only think of a few companies that have such a product. I guess when by some miracle or chance event, such a product becomes "iconic", then its only natural to preserve that status or status quo. On the flip side, many Daytona followers and owners would be upset if they were going for list with 10-15 lying in the display cabinet.

Furthermore, we are looking from a "buyer" or "want a discount" point of view. But honestly although i cant speak for others, if i had something or some skill that was in demand or very unique, then yes i would charge a premium. You can see a busker on the street play a guitar for free, you want to see Eric Clapton play the guitar, you got to pay a "premium".

If we are looking at watches only, then in my experience, my AD here is also a Patek dealer and a Rolex Dealer. He will sell you any Patek model, no wait list or premium drama. BUT if you want a Daytona, you have to buy jewellery in the range of 15-20k before he will sell you a Daytona at list. In all fairness, barring some of the very exclusive Pateks (of which Rolex also has their fair share) most Pateks dont require a premium or wait list. Plus most of these Pateks drop 40-60% out the door depending on who you are selling to. You Daytona may drop 10% and thats about it, plus being ss, you just polish it up and looks like new, ready for a quick sale.

Hmm, i don't think its quiet LEGAL to sell it that much over msrp at AD. Unless he's selling them out back door. I'll have to double check on this tomorrow at work, but there is certain price range ad's have to stay in and give discount off.

so true, how many people can spend $100,000+ on watches to buy a SS Daytona at $7,900? I mean at $12,500, I would rather buy a used WG D-series Daytona at $13,500 or something else.
