Buying and selling between the US and Canada

Guys,

So I've been in the US for the past few years and have now moved to Canada...I'm originally from the UK if anyone's interested!

Anyway....I can see that a lot of people on here are from the US and an even higher percentage of those selling (and buying) are in the US.

So, how have people got on when buying and selling watches between the US and Canada? Do people get stung by import taxes or duty? Is there a way to get around this?

Cheers,

Chris

You can ship most watches to the US from Canada or the other way around, but Rolexes might be stopped at the border going from Canada to the US. Rolex US claims copyright and marketing exclusivity in the US, and thus shipping into the US from another country can be a problem. Rolexes coming into Canada from the US are not a problem, however.

Much of the time shippng a watch into Canada from the US will draw 5% duty plus 13% HST, ('harmonized sales tax'), on the declared value. Quite often I have found the 5% duty is not levied, however. The term 'declared value' is something to be careful of. Often a shipper will declare a low value to save you tax and duty, but customs will open packages and if the invoice shows a higher amount was paid, they will levy duty and taxes on the invoiced price. I do not recommend asking the shipper to declare false values on incoming goods, because customs has the option of becoming very shirty about fraud. They can confiscate packages and etc.

I had one stopped by customs. Got a nasty letter from Rolex attorneys who held it up for a week. Spoke on phone with them and they said they would allow it to be returned to seller this time- threatened to confiscate it. I was lucky as it got back to seller who returned my money. They made me sweat it out though! Not a fun ordeal......
