Sumariner or GMT Master

Hi there, I am debating between a Submariner with date or a GMT Master II. Which one is a safer buy for investment? Are they similar size watch except the berzel looks different.

They are the same size and have essentially the same movement, except that the GMT II has an extra hand to mark off 24 hr time on its bezel so you can track another time zone. The GMT's bezel can rotate in both directions.

The Sub's bezel is different - it marks off time for dives (in minutes) and can only move anticlockwise. This watch's case is also slightly thicker to enable a larger depth rating - 1000ft versus 300ft for the GMT.

IMO neither watch should be viewed as an investment. I believe both hold their value equally well.

Hope this helps.

My GMT II doesn't rotate in both directions, it's a 2001 model year, is that normal for this year ?

Something is wrong. It should go both ways. Bad or wrong click spring. Maybe just dirty underneath.

Do you know what? i have had Rolex watches for more than 25 years, but never owned a GMT, i dont know why! because i love the 1675, i am going to make that my next buy, but back to the question, either, or, they are both super watches.

I've had both, and Rolex makes piles of each. I like the GMT movement but value the watertightness of the Subs even more. Neither really works as an investment more than the other because Rolex controls the number that reach the market.

I have been wearing GMT II continuously in the last 25 years. It's now been replaced with a Sub C for one simple reason: The numbers on the GMTIIc bezel are too large, too bold, too "in your face".

If they would have kept the old fonts and size, I would have gotten the GMTIIc.

Sub, the most wanted Rolex, so you wont have trouble selling down the line.

I vote for the Submariner. Don't buy it as an investment, buy whichever one appeals to you the most. Good luck in your decision!

Others have answered the investment question better than I could.

I flipped back and forth between ceramic Sub and ceramic GMT for some time. You note that they do have similarities.

I settled on the GMT in a sort of "Let's face it" moment... I rarely dive below roughly 1m in the pool. So whereas a GMT can be viewed as slightly Walter Mitty-esque given the many blank pages of my passport. a need for the sub's signature feature could be viewed as delusional!

That said, the call of the TT Blue is strong, and I sense an LB before year end.

Truly, my love of motorsports puts the Daytona VERY high on my list, but I fell in love with the all gold model and can't see tying that much up in one item at this time. I think I need to stew on it and come to the conclusion that the alignment of my fiftieth birthday and the likelihood of a green-handed all gold Daytona in 2012-2013 will be enough to open my wallet.

Both are great watches. You'll find them quite different in the feel and look.

The right answer is BOTH!

Tough choice. Both great watches. I'd probably leaned towards the Sub, unless you're a frequent traveler whereby it makes sense to get the 24hr hand.

Good luck. keep us posted.

I went for the GMT rather than the sub. But really, I would have been happy with either.

They are both great watches. I own both and they each have pros and cons... I personally do like the PCL's on the GMT so this is a plus for me. The clasp on the Sub IMHO is far superior however the Easy Link on the GMT is more than adequate too. I like the "busy" bezel of the GMT but know others that do not. They also wear quite differnt as well. My best advice would be to try them on and see what one you like best and not to worry what anyone else says

How do they wear or feel differently. I'm in the same boat as the OP in trying to choose between the sub and gmt ii (and maybe the seadweller??!!) I really need to seek clinical help....

To keep and wear? GMT no doubt. I think it looks better plus I'd actually use the time zone functionality when I travel. I don't dive so the Subs functionality wouldn't do much for me.

If I had intention to sell, possibly a Sub because everybody knows and wants a Sub.
