Tag Heuer Vs Used rolex

Right now I am debating on either getting a Brand new tag heuer automatic aquamancer chronograph caf 2012.ba0815 which I can get at around 55% off and from a real dealer so the 3 year warranty applies. that thing cost like $1599 or so. Anyway I would like to add a diamond bezel to it I know you can do it which adds another 1-1.5K to it. Or would you suggest getting a 1990's datejust with a diamond dial. What I really like is a diamond dial blue Vignette with diamond bezel on it there was a guy selling one all the way down to $3K but now can't find anything. Also which one will hold its value. Will the tag go way down in the next 3 years if I tried to sell if it was in great condion compared to the almost 15 year old datejust?

If you get the Tag, your going to just wish you had a rolex. The rolex will hold it's value much better.

If you buy a Porsche Boxter

You will always still want a 911

not the best analogy but you get my drift

Years ago, I bought a brand new TAG. I had nothing but trouble with it. I flipped it for a Seamaster, and then flipped that for a DJ. I now have a 16610 Sub and the TAG is a distant, unpleasant memory. Get the Rolex. Everybody on this forum will say the same!

Welcome to TRF! Spent a lot of time at the Red River District. As with everyone else, save your funds and get a Rolex. I may even recommend that you bypass the DJ and get a sports model (as you eventually will anyways). Tags are ok - I had a McQueen Monaco - but you won't see much residual value with them. Hold your Rolex long enough and you may even get your money back.

I have never understood why Rolex watches increase in value over time. I guess it's the ultimate status symbol.Like art or collector cars. It's a "rich and famous" item--maybe.

Part of it is the value of gold, since gold or ss/gold watches seem to appreciate more than the ss watches. Part of it is excellence and artistry.

That's actually a great analogy; as long as he can afford a 911.

Don't expect your TAG to hold its value. It's a decent watch but not in the same league as Rolex, no matter what the TAG people tell you.

I'd go for the Rolex. If you must have diamonds, you'll get one for a good price as they aren't too popular and don't re-sell as well as say an SS model.

Go for the Rolex, you'll, regret the TAG. There's a reason it's 55% off.

The first "expensive" watch that I ever bought was a TAG. I quickly regretted it. In terms of actual quality, TAG is clearly below Rolex and OMEGA. I would put less expensive and significantly better value brands like Tissot in the same league.

IMO, TAG offers absolutely nothing to horology (far too many quartz offerings, designs that fade away quickly). If you really love a TAG model, sleep on it for a half a year, then buy it if you still lust for it.

Never buy a modern TAG if you care at all about resale value. Generally, no other semi-mass-produced brand is worse for resale.

Was never a fan of TAG... Save whatever you are going to plunk down and get yourself a Rolex DJ.

A DateJust is just plain classic, period! As for the diamond bezel, not really into diamonds so I have no comment.

Always get what you like, your going to wear or not wear it. However generally something cost less for a reason.

Views on this forum maybe slighty biased towards Rolex. However how many places do you really think are going to recomend a Tag over a Rolex?

Buy what you like the most... but if you are even considering resell value... that reason alone should keep you away from Tags. Any Rolex will beat out modern day Tag in resell as long as you stick with stainless steel models.

you are on the wrong forum buddy. Nobody here will recommend a Tag.

Unless you are buying the classic blue Monaco I would go with the DJ. That is the only tag I would prefer over the DJ.

Oh but you want the diamonds..so monaco is out of question. DJ all the way.

A rolex is a rolex and a tag is a watch. Nothing beats how wearing a rolex feels each day. A rolex is worth it. I would get the rolex. Just make sure it was taken care of like service papers etc to show you it was serviced. You dont need an older rolex that needs 1000 bucks in parts and service.

Um....not exactly. The two tone 18k/ss Daytona for example sells for much less than an all ss Daytona on the secondary market...

Also, most modern Rolex watches will not increase dramatically in value over time. The vintage pieces are worth significantly more than they were back when they were released - even with inflation factored in - because Rolex didn't make anywhere near as many of them.

Nevertheless, a desirable Rolex like a GMT will always keep far better resale value than most other watches, especially compared to a TAG.

Watch purchase is a personal decision and you buy what you like.

But please please please, go for a Rolex.
