Icon20 New or pre-owned - need your advice.

I am new to TRF and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading here for hours-on-end since I joined. I have learned a tremendous amount, but like any technical pursuit, it takes years to absorb enough information to competently make decisions on your own. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

I am either going to purchase a "new" DSSD or a "pre-owned" DSSD from a trusted dealer here in TRF. I have already talked with the dealer and he is looking for a pre-owned DSSD for me, but he has a new DSSD available immediately. There is a considerable difference in price between the mint, pre-owned and the new DSSD. The question then becomes:

is it worth the extra money to have the papers and the warranty in my name versus buying pre-owned?

I'm not one of these guys who has to buy everything new, but I will if there is an advantage to doing so. Here is how I see it.

It seems that the odds are great that either a brand new or mint, pre-owned Rolex will not need warranty work during the two year factory warranty period. Assuming that is generally the case (I realize there are no absolutes!), is there any real advantage to purchasing new?

It seems to me that purchasing a mint, pre-owned Rolex makes more sense, but if I am missing something here, please correct me and I will definitely purchase new.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

BTW, I have tried on both a DSSD and a Sub-C so I am fully aware of the size of the DSSD and I currently wear a watch that is slightly larger than the DSSD, so no worries about the size of the DSSD.

Depends

If money is no object, buy new. But, a Rolex can easily last 50 years. If someone else uses it for five years, you can have it for 90% of it's life and save a lot of money by going pre-owned.

The savings on a DSSD could get you an extra Rolex. To buy pre-owned, you have to educate yourself a little about the models. New Rolex are all the same, but used ones cover a wide range condition and updates. To me, a 20 year old Rolex can still be a great watch.

Usually the dealer does not give that great of a discount on SS Sport models. Some of the trusted sellers here such as Davidsw and justrolexes to name two can usually get you a pretty decent deal on the DSSD. Prices have come down quite a bit on this model now. They can source you preowned or possibly bnib!! Give them both an email and good luck!! I have never used the Rolex warranty in over 30 years of buying, selling, owning BUT it can still happen...there is nothing quite like pulling the stickers off your bnib Rolex. The choice is up to you!!

It's all a matter of preference I think. You really cant go wrong with a preowned mint Rolex. The first owner saved you the depreciation hit.

I recommend that you do purchase a Rolex.. It's a timepiece that will last you a lifetime if you choose..

As to how you buy it, or if saving a few bucks is what you're looking for; it's a personal decision.. However, you should never put your wants above your needs...

By this time next year, you likely won't know the difference one way or the other, and it's nice to be the only owner of a fine automobile or a fine timepiece....

No fair. You just sent him in two different directions in one sentence!

I agree, btw.

I couldn't agree more with the above statement!

I would totally buy pre-loved. It's like rescuing an animal from a shelter. You wouldn't love the animal any less.

if it just comes down to the saving I would buy pre owned,if you should need a service in the first 2 years I would think the saving you make should well cover that.

Pre-owned. And a watch that new, you are likely to get the box and papers anyway, so it really won't matter, except that you will save $$$.

Pre-loved all the way! Even if you think you'll never flip, if you do, it'll keep many thousands in your pocket over the years.

From discussing this very thing, with one of the trusted sellers, there is one of the RSC's that is more lenient with regard to doing warranty work (on different named warranty) should it ever be needed. If the price difference, from a trusted seller here, is drastic I would opt for a mint LNIB. If not I would save up a little while longer and get the NIB with my name on the papers.

if you are buying from a well-known, trusted seller on TRF, no worries with new, no worries with pre-owned. if you buy a BNIB from such a person, the watch will be pristine and likely a solid $1000.00 off new(or more). If the seller is going to warrant the watch for a year or so, fix it if there's a problem, then NO problem, bro!

i'd say it depends on how well you will sleep at night without the Rolex warranty......

DSSD are being heavily discounted pre owned so this is definitely the way i would go.
but you could check with AD to see if they are offering steep discounts as well.

the other consideration is that the DSSD will have higher costs associated with ownership
1)the ceramic bezel is costly to replace if the need should arise vs aluminum.
2)the greater pressure means that not all service centers will work on your watch.

purchase must include rolex warranty as sometimes really unexpected things are wrong with a watch and its nice to bring it into rolex and say here you go... fix it.

the ceramic bezel would be the same either new or pre owned, the OP didn't say he was considering the 2 different models, and if he were to make a saving greater than the cost of a service I don't think a warranty must be included in any deal.

I'd buy new if you don't have any fund restraints. If you want to save a couple hundred dollars, I would buy a pre-owned watch that has remainder of the factory warranty.

If you buy a brand new watch, after a week's worth of wearing it around, you're going to have couple of scratches. It is inevitable.

It's up to you brother!

Thank you all for your replies.

It appears from the consensus here that there is no real advantage to buying new. Given your feedback, I am just going to be patient and wait for the trusted seller (DavidSW, BTW) to find me a LNIB specimen.

I went into my local AD last week and offered them cash for a new DSSD and they offered me a 0% discount. I own a business in the community and I like supporting other local businesses, but they didn't show me any love as another local business owner. After my experience with the local AD, it freed my conscience to come back to the forum and contact DavidSW. Hopefully, my wait won't be too long for a pre-loved DSSD.

My only fear is that soon I will be infected with the Rolex virus like all of you other guys. (And from the looks of things around here there is no cure for the disease!)

1)My omission, the OP was not speaking about 2 different models (ceramic vs aluminum) however the topic was about cost, and i think that its worth pointing out there are additional costs associated with servicing ceramic bezels and DSSD's (as well as SD's) over the cost of an old school 16610

2)i wasn't speaking about a routine service:
i have had a watch with a dial defect and a watch with a case defect as well both weren't immediately noticeable.
in unexpected cases like this it is nice to have rolex back there product... they wouldn't without the warranty, and this would pass the additional costs to you the consumer.

and i'm sorry but i seemed to have missed the part of your message that had something worthwhile to offer?

I know people would never consider buying anything preloved. It's so that they can say they bought it new. Each to their own .... I prefer to let someone else wear the depreciation for me first.

Pre-owned can be great...but make sure that you wait and get the right one, in exactly the condition you want it, with whatever "stuff" may be important to you, and from the right seller. Don't just jump on the first one that comes along. There'll be plenty more coming up behind it.

I would suggest checking out the price of a new one versus a pre-owned one and decide if its worth the extra to have your first one brand new. Some model's pre-owned price is almost the same as a brand new price. I have even seen a pre-owned price a little more than the price you could get a brand new one for LOL

the worth while part of my post was pointing out to the OP that the saving he says he can get would in all likely hood cover a service or even a new bezel if needed,he did state in the post it was a substantial saving, and no need to be sorry because you didn't miss the points I was making but only took them the wrong way,it also seems the cheers smile wasn't ment so you could have left that off for me.
