Well, guys just got an offer to go to Afghanistan for a year, to work as a Project Manager for a US DOD project.

Looks like my Explorer II will not work there, as Afghan is one of 5 countries, that is one 1/2 hour time differences. Maybe will just keep on 24 hour time or just remember to compensate 30 minutes for home or GMT time.

Been actaully looking at buying a new watch to take on the journey. IWC Engineer (anti-shock and anti magnetic properties). Or Ulysse Nardin maxi Diver (great lum and nice rubber bracelet). Would have liked to get a hold of one of the new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms (in my opinion the best mechanical dive watch out there).

First, I hope you take great care and I hope the money they pay you makes it worth it. On the other side, it's always good to take on challenges too--makes life interesting.

Here's my recommendation: there is a quartz watch made call the "Yes" watch. In addition to having time zones for almost 600 cities already programmed into the watch which can be changed at the touch of a button, it also has a display which gives you dawn and sunset information for all the cities. One factor I should tell you about first if you consider this watch: it has 2 batteries--one to drive the "hand" (you'll have to look at the watch to see what I mean) and another which powers the display of the clock and sundown/sunup. My experience is that although they tell you that you have the batteries will last a 1-2 years, in reality the battery that drives the display will only last 9-10 months. So if your asignment lasts longer than this, you will not only want to bring an extra battery, you will also need to bring the tool to change the battery (open the case) and make sure you know how to do this yourself. The watch also has an alarm and several other features. It could be the ideal solution, just make sure you know how to change the battery--the company is way too optimistic about that. I don't use mine much because I normally wear my mechanical watches, but even though this is true, my battery works only a fraction of what they say it will. I would guess that I wear this model about 2-3 days a month. They sell over the web, so you should be able to easily find them. Best of luck to you.

I see by your last paragraph your real problem. You want a new watch !!!

Of course we both know that your Exp II will work just fine and you will have a reliable, quality timepiece on your wrist.

But to help you with your "problem".

Your choices are heavy in good dive watches. I don't think you will be happy until you get one of those you have your eye on. Try 'em on your wrist, fall in love, or whatever.

The Nardin Maxi diver will probably work well in Afghanistan.

Glashutte Sport Evolution (Pros: Bracelet- micor adjustements while on your wrist, case, see through back, packaging, company, large date, comes with SS bracelet and Rubber strap. Cons: Lum only on 3,6,9, adn 12.)

IWC Ingenieur Stainless Steel (Pros: tough watch, anti magnetic, bracelet, shock proof, history, looks. Cons: Top heavy, hard to get perfect fit, poor lum)

IWC Ingeneir AMG (Pros: same as above plus Titanium bracelet and case- very comfy on wrist and light weight. Cons: Egreaved with Mercedes Ben on back of case, number 10 cut in half, poor lum, like design of SS version's dial better)

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean (Pros: Solid, co-axial, comfy bracelet, good water resistance, classic look, good lum, nice beazel, very smoothed out edges, can get SS bracelet and Rubber strap. Cons: a little heavy)

Omega Speedmaster (Pros: Manual wind, see through back, solid chronograph, good bracelet, history, cool looking crystal Cons: no date and only 50m water resistance)

Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver (Pros: good lum, unique looking dial, nice packaging and box, titanium/rubber bracelet, nice bezel, nice case Cons: think a little over priced)

Gerrad Perragaux Seahawk III 42mm (Pros: Super nice fitting case, great lum, bezel, bracelet looks good, packaging, in house movement, crown at 4 oclock. Cons: BRacelet had to get exact fit, no micro adjustments, bracelet clasp comes loose easily)

Sinn UX ( Pros: Price, great lum, crown at 4, rubber bracelet and SS clasp, fit. Cons: Quartz movement)

Panerai Radiomir (Pros: See through back, manual wind, great lum, conmfortable case and leather strap. Cons: No seconds hand or date)

Blancpain FF GMT (Pros: Bracelet and clasp, lum, movement, 100 hours power reserve, dail layout. Cons: Expensive, little bright. could be about 1-2 mm bigger in diameter, crown sits a little low on wrist)
