day date quartz? worth it?

Folks, been offered by a trusted grey dealer a mid 80's yellowgold daydate quartz. I'm aware it was fashionable in that era... Pricewise it's a deal, paying just for the gold! Wondering: is the movement running smoothly like an automatic or it's more tic-tac like a swatch? should i pull the trigger? 5000$ equivalents!

Sounds like a good deal and at that price I would buy it. Does this trusted dealer have any GMTIIc's or DD 18238's for a good price??

For $5,000-5,500 you should be able to find an older DD with a "real" movement.

If I had the bread I'd pull the trigger.......it's a unique Rolex!
You're not gonna see it on every wrist.

Certainly. For sure you won't see many of these in the wild. Most folks here are not fans of quartz movements (nor am I), but if you're going to have one quartz watch, it might as well be a Rolex.....and a rare one at that.

If you do it, post pics please.

Good luck!

Hmmm... price is good... it just depend on if you want a quartz Rolex. All quartz watch has that tic toc movement... not sweeping.
I personally wouldnt do it. 5k is a lot of money with many time pieces to choose from... vintage sub, gmt, exp2... any of these would be my first choice. But buy what you like, it would be a cool rare piece.

It is all about - do you want a quartz? Me - no. But it is your decision.

Not a fan of a quartz! Especially for that amount. If you wanted a quartz movement pic up a pre-owned quartz SMP 300 bond. But again thats a different watch all together. For the 5k I'd go with a sub or something else. IMHO

Wait! Do you already have a Rolex? I think that's instrumental.
If you want to have a rare piece, for sure it's going to be rare. Also, the gold is the gold is the gold. That's always worth money.
I'd certainly consider it.

I would seriously doubt that there is $5,000 worth of gold in an older DD Quartz watch...

It's a classic though, and is collectible so it shouldn't be scoffed at...

Yes... it is quartz... it ticks..

Agreed. You can't get one that cheap and as you add more to your collection, it's nice to have a little something different.

That movie was on last night on Starz at like 2:30am. I was just ready to go to sleep when I found it. Needless to say I stayed up way too late watching. Brought back a lot of good memories. When Goldmember first came out I was 17 and in HS...

At $5k your getting close to the melt value.

I think its about 2.5 ounces in a day date. At todays spot value that's about $3750 base value.

Another way of looking at it is you can always get your $3750 back even if Rolex's go completely out of favor and a SS variety Rolex was worthless.

Yet another view, its like buying 2 and 1/2 Krugerrands, and for an extra $1,250, you get a rolex.

For those who have never worn or seen in person a quartz DD, you really need to see one before passing judgement. I have one and it really is unique and and a gorgeous watch. I also have others in my collection that are perpetual motion. If it's your only Rolex, I can see not wanting one but they are the most accurate Rolex made hands down. Just my 2 cents.

There was a thread about gold in a Rolex but was on TT if interested http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=172984

Is the gold value really at average of $3750 that with the hollow center link and 18k instead of 24k gold?

Do the math.

When gold was at $400, the melt value was calcuated at $963.

Today gold is at at $1500.

I did, not very difficult.

100 grams at $25/gr = $2,500

Curious. I would love to buy gold at $25 a gram.

I would buy gold all day long at $25 a gram.

Todays spot gold value is $1495 /troy ounce. With 31.1 grams to a troy ounce that comes out to $48 a gram.

Check out http://goldprice.org/gold-price-per-gram.html

$25/gram sounds like a mall scrap buyer price.

Are you serious and have you sold any gold?

Do you really think someone is going to pay you spot value?

PS. Mall scrap price is $17-18

Forgot to add, I buy and sell roughly 3-5 Kilos a week.

Frequently.

Spot? NO. (in any event spot is the benchmark and then there is the premium or discount to spot)

But it's not hard to get 90% plus as long as you don't go to one of the street level gold buyers that are a dime/dozen.

This place is very nice and has a good reputation. http://www.midwestrefineries.com/
