What would you do in this scenario--
I have an Explorer and a Submariner, and these are my only automatic watches (my Speedmaster is the manual wind). I was also gifted with an Orbita Sparta watch winder.
Now, what I would like to do is wear the Explorer M-F, and make the Submariner my weekend watch. My question is, in terms of wear and tear, would I be better off keeping the Sub on the Orbita during the week, or should I let it rest and re-set/wind up every weekend? Would any wear and tear from unscrewing the crown every week be greater than keeping it on the winder? I apologize if this subject has been addressed a million times in another variation, but I'm interested in your opinions. Thanks a lot! |

I personally wouldn't use a winder. Wear the watch you want to wear at that time and if required wind it up manually

I am anti winder unless you have a watch with multiple complications that is a bear to set. Other than that, they are a waste of money IMHO, I would rather have my mechanical movements "resting".

Why not alternate between all three? It's always nice to change it up IMO. With regards the Sub & Exp, they both have pretty good reserve time, so I don't see the need to wind same since you have an Orbita.

I agree with Joe.......and since you have 3.....you could wear all of them all, change it up during the 7 days......no need for the Orbita....sell it & use the funds towards buying another watch.

I would not think twice about using a winder. At all times I have two to three Rolex on my winder... never had any issues

I use a winder because it makes life easier. But, I also manually wind all my watches at least once a month, leave off winder, to keep the winding train lubricants where they should be.

No winder--manual wind fine. Keeping on a winder will put excess wear on watch-that is a fact. I know one thing--not one of my vintage watches will ever see a winder other than me wrist and thumb/finger! Whatever floats your boat though......

i got a dual winder two years ago from my wife as a gift, and used it for a few weeks, until i realized it was a waste for me. let them rest when not worn. that seems to be the best advice. however, regardless of more or less wear, if the machine is configured properly, they cant break your watch to the point of no repair, and I can see why people use them. i dont mind rotating and setting watches.

I use winders and make sure the direction is switched each day. Some watche's though do sit in the safe for a few weeks at a time and I usually don't use the crown but simply gently shake the watch when it meets the correct time. Each to his own, I guess.

I bought an inexpensive winder, but I no longer bother to use it. I don't like the idea of non-stop wear on the movements.

My 2-watch winder sits idle as the cushions are a bit too big for my bracelet settings.

I like winders. The convenience of just taking the watch off and putting it on my wrist appeals to me.
