Too small, too big or just right . . .
This isn't the three little bears, but I'm curious to know. Are the people who criticize Rolex 40mm standard size as too small a younger crowd or are there a lot of older fans who think 40mm is too small and should adapt.
This isn't a debate about whether should Rolex increase the size of their watches, more WHO--age wise--believes so? |

I think the 40mm size works for the average size man... but a HUGE watch on AVERAGE guy looks silly... for the same reason Rolls Royce doesn't make a GMC sized truck I think Rolex shouldn't make a Panerai sized watch...

I consider myself a young guy, 40mm works for my skinny wrist. Although If i wanted to draw some attention then I would wear a larger watch, lets a PAM. But there are plenty of guys out there you have big wrist and a larger watch wouldn't scream out at you.

40mm works well for me although I enjoy wearing the occasional 42-44mm.

Sorry cannot help you here either. I think 40mm is pure perfection and I am 32. I will certainly try the new EXP II at 42 however I think anything larger than this is too large for a daily wearer

I would go anywhere from 39 to 42....
Anything bigger or smaller would be out of the question for me |

I'm with you there! I'm 6'8, 350, size 17 feet with hands/wrists to match, always went for 44mm because of my Sasquatch like size, but somehow the Sub C seems just big enough for me, due I guess to the maxi case and beefed up lugs. I'm 42 if it matters. Middle age? :)

I have always felt that a Rolex oyster case watch, no matter which one, wears bigger than its specs.

At first I did think it was way to big for me but then with time I grew to appreciate its just the right size. But if your looking for a monster , the breitling super avenger is at a ridiculous 49mm (I think ) that's too Yukozuna for me.

Too small?! I think not. I think that is about right. I have a 45.5 Omega PO but that is just for a bit of novelty but I wouldn't want all my watches to be that size. All my watches are no larger than 41mm except for the PO, smallest is 36mm. I'm not old and not too young either, I'm just right

My watches are just like my age.
Between 36 and 40. I think 36 still is a good size too. |

I'm 30 and 40mm is perfect for my 6.5" wrist, even though I own both 36mm and 44mm watches in the past.

My watches are between 36 and 40 mm with the exception of the 42mm Speedmaster. (but the Speedy wears smaller on leather)
This whole '' too small'' thing is located between the ears IMHO. 36mm <> 40mm watches are fine for everyone unless you have really big wrists.

at one point i owned a Breitline super avenger and a bentley motors t speed. both of which are mamoth sized watches. and on a guy that has an average wrist size of 7 inches, the watches just looked stupid on me. I have since got rid of both those watches and gone down in size to better suit me. I now own a chronomat and a bentley GT both of which are 44mm. I was always a rolex hater. dont ask me why.....i just was. i guess part of me never really wanted to give credit to them for some weird reason. I have recently added a subc to my collection and honestly could not be happier. i truly love the 40mm size and think that it looks great on my wrist. but i must admit the case improvements rolex made makes this watch wear much larger. IMO the larger watches are more hip for younger people, at least this was the case in my situation. |

in all honesty i dont know why i was into the big dinner plate watches, i just was. these days im more than happy to go 40-44. i even think that 44 is a bit large but there are a couple of pieces that i like there in the breitling range and they dont look stupid on me so im ok with it. but seriously 44 i my limit. havent looked too much into vintage rolex. im so new the brand im still drooling everytime i look at my subc. but now that you mentioned it, it might have opened a can of worms....lol bud |

40-42mm seems fine, but the design and shape can make a huge difference to how "big" they wear.

I've always wore big watches 'til I met my DJ 36mm, I like 36mm personally.
Tried, Air-King, but seems to be little too small for me. It comes down to a personal preference. |

I'm 32, 6'3" and about 190lbs. My wrist is about 7 1/4-7 1/2".
I love 40mm (old style case, I think the maxi case looks too bug/square.) For a dress watch I'd love a 36mm Patek. I've got little or no interest in a bigger watch unless it had a damn good reason th be that big, ie Breitling Emergency, and even then I'd only buy one for it's function, not it's form!

so much depends on wrist size and, just as importantly, wrist shape....and height and weight....and personal taste.
i don't get wrapped up in millimeters....either the watch "sings" to me or it doesn't, and i don't think it's much more complicated than that. so, i don't think generalizations like "40mm is the perfect size" work. just my two cents.... |
