Please help me decide. SUBC or DSSD...
Ok here we go..my first Rolex was a 16610 a few weeks back. I really liked the watch, but I kept wanting a 14060M...
Now I only have a small collection (limited funds ) so a 14060M and 16610 will be too close in appearance when I feel like a change on my wrist... I decided to move my 16610 for a part trade for either a black SUB-C 116610 or DSSD 116660. Now I have handled both on many occasions but just cant seem to be sure which I prefer ..there are small things which I don't like on both and a lot to like in both...for example: SubC- pros: lighter, less height, AR cyclops cons: squarish case, smallish crown compared to case DSSD- pros: Rarer to see in the wild, matte dial, full minute marks bezel cons: thickness, writing on rehaut Now this will be worn in rotation so height and weight is not really a big issus.. I most honestly cannot decide which I like best. I have read many review, pics etc..but honestly they seem to be pretty much equal to me.. Can owners of both (or of even one) give me their feedback on both watches, pics of the 2 together are VERY much appreciated... |

i am very biased towards the subc. i have no cons, only pros.
with the dssd have similar problems as you do: too big, too thick but most of all i dislike the writing on the ring. it is the major reason i did not even consider the dssd. and btw, the price difference is an issue as well. if you like them both, buy the subc and have fun with the rest of the money.

The writing on the dial is the SINGLE REAL reason why I do not consider the DSSD to be the best. Some people say it is barely visible...but on the half dozen opportunities that I handled the watch it was really noticeable when looking at the dial..probably just because I hate it so much ... |

Between those two I'd lean towards the SubC. I wore a DSSD everyday for over a year and really enjoyed it - that is until I finally realized it was just too tall. And then I realized I don't care for ceramic. So here I am, back with my trusty 16610 and I will never look back. Good luck with your decision...

I also had a 16610 sub and went to the AD to try on the Subc and DSSD. The Subc was nice, but it was still similar to the 16610 sub. Also, I didn't think the extra couple K it was going to cost me was worth it.
Now the DSSD, is a different beast. It was big, chunky and looked great on me. That was the one for me to have. What about keeping your date sub and getting the DSSD? |

My sub C is my daily go to watch. It is classic, comfortable and the brushed bracelet makes it safe for more rugged use. The glidelock bracelet is also a great feature. But try them both on and go buy what YOU feel is the best choice.
When I first started buying Rolex watches I listened to the TRF opinions at the expense of my own taste. I soon found that although I respected the opinions and tastes of others, I was the only one responsible for my long term satisfaction. Good luck! |

I went with this. Just can't pull off 18mm in height for the DSSD.

I had a very hard time with this decision, ended up just buying both. If I was you however with limited funds I would keep what I have. You already have a nice sub date, what's the point in getting a subC? I would say if you have to change it, get the DSSD. It's big but it is the ultimate Rolex as far as I am concerned. When I wear it I'm like WOW. When I wear the SubC I think, ahh feels lighter then after half a day I want the DSSD back on my wrist. Go DSSD!

it is just my 2 cents but even the 14060m looks rather big on your wrist. can't really imagine a dssd there.....

DSSD was a love affair for me too... until I one morning woke up and realized it's too big for a guy weighing in at 155lb.

Personally I opted to purchase the Sub-C because it is just more wearable for a chap with a wrist my size (6.75 inches) - it is a great watch and I am sure you would be delighted with it. That said the 16610 and 14060M are a great combination so I would think very hard before letting one of them go to fund either a Sub-C or DSSD - my inclination would be to stick with what you have and just save a little longer to add either of the options you have identified - you can have fun trying them on in different ADs and tracking the best deals etc until the day finally comes

Have you considered the original Sea Dweller? It might be a good compromise between the two.
I love the DSSD but opted for the SubC LV and I LUV my LV |

Sub C for sure...
DSSD is just too big for me but the thing that really turns me off is all the writing on the dial |

SubC all the way! iconic watch with a universal size! DSSD might just be "out" in the future(personal opinion)

For me, if it's a rugged tool watch, it has got to be chunky. A sporty tool watch IMO should not also be a dress watch. I like a lot of chunky watches e.g. the (now discontinued) Breitling Chrono Avenger in Ti ( 18.75 ish I think),
JLC Master Compressor Diving Pro, Omegas etc all chunky rugged pieces so the Deepsea was the ideal Rolex for me. I do like the sub but I think the extra money for the improved clasp, no cyclops, better engineering, HEL etc is well worth it plus, as you say, you don't see them on other people.(except a friend of mine went out and bought one after trying mine on.) Both good watches - buy with your heart. |

IMO - the SubC and DSSD can be "similar" to the 14060M.... so how about an EXPII or a GMTII/GMTIIC?

If you like the 14060M? Why not get one?
Its cheaper, more comfortable to wear, instant classic, drilled lug holes ... |

After handling both I feel like the Sub C feels 'chintzy' by comparison. Also, DSSD is the one that would feel and look at lot more different to your existing watches no matter which you get rid of if you choose to do so. If you want variety among the watches you have, I'd opt for the DSSD over the Sub C for that reason alone. Sub C is really nice, but DSSD is the flagship. Also, 43mm is not so much larger than 40mm. If the DSSD was 'out' it would probably mean that 40mm watches are 'out' and people were starting to once again gravitate towards 34-36mm watches. At one point in time, those were the norm. That is not to say that there isn't such thing as a monstrous watch that is 'fad' watch status, but dive watches tend to be larger anyhow no matter who makes them be it IWC, Seiko, AP, etc.

If you are a bigger guy, go w the DSSD-you get the bigger watch experience with the class and elegance that only Rolex offers
