Icon5 Submariner 1680 solid gold or GMT 1675 (acrylic) solid gold?

A reputable Melbourne vintage-watch dealer has just shown me, two watches and they are both in above excellent condition.

One is a Submariner ref 1680 in 18k solid gold and comes with a blue dial, while the other is a GMT Master ref 1675 (acrylic plexi), also in 18k solid gold and comes with a brown dial. Though I am attracted to both, very likely, I can afford to get only one of them, either to keep or for daily wear.

Which of the two, you reckon, will hold its value better, should I decide to re-sell it, say in five years' time, from now? Also, which of the two is rarer and will become more collectible?

I guess you'll have to give more info like the year they are from and if they have original dials, hands etc. If possible post pics and the pros here will tell you if is a great buy and would be original enough to resell.

Thank you.

The dials are original to both the watches.

Unfortunately, I did ask for the pictures from the dealer and he has since returned to Melbourne, since I could not decide on which one to buy. I could not decide, on the spot, since I really wanted both but budget does not allow me to do so, unfortunately.

Should he get in touch with me again (hopefully), I will ask him to send me some pictures of those watches.

Thank you.

The GMT Root Beer with a Jubilee hidden clasp would by my choice.

Thank you.

It has the jubilee bracelet but without the hidden clasp. The dealer told me, the bracelet came with the watch. It is a little loose, though. I am not worried about the bracelet, since I have never worn any watch with a metal bracelet but always, a leather-band.

I really do not know, whether it is a Root Beer or not but the dial is brown, while the bezel insert is of only one color, matching the dial. It is an impressive watch but not as thick as the Submariner, I reckon.

Thank you.

I'd go for the sub. Think it's better value if price is similar.

Thank you.

No, the Sub is more expensive by A$3 000.00. However, the Sub looks more impressive, since the case is thicker, I reckon.

Thank you.

The sub looks more contemporary with the blue dial and has more impact. Pretty as the browns are, they look a bit dated.

I really think, it is not an easy choice. You may be right.

Whoever he is, I shall bring it to RSC to inspect, since I will have to take into account, whether or not the watch will require a service. Whether it is going to be serviced by RSC or not is another matter.

Thank you.

i would think that the sub has a greater audience and more popular in general. both have their fans and are hard to find in mint but for re-sale, i reckon the sub would sell better as it is more popular IMHO.

Really, the Sub case is impressive but the blue dial is a little too eye-catching for a vintage-watch - I think.

Thanks and regards.

Without seeing either piece, the 1680 would be my choice. I'm not sure how many were made, but perhaps less than the GMT.

Thank you.

I thank all those who have given me their invaluable advice.

It appears, I have to save a little bit more money, so that I will be able to get a Sub 1680 18k that comes with a black dial.

Once again, many thanks to all members of the fabulous forum.

Thank you.

Now there's your solution, black lets you take the sub a little low key but it still looks cool and modern!
