Vintage newbie

Hi all

I am pretty new to the world of vintage rolex and I would like to know more about dials and hands. How can I tell the dial type ? and how do I know if it has been relumed ?

Can you share a link or any other way to get more knowledge in this field.

Thanks

Your question is far too broad---may I suggest taking the time to do some research--there is tons of good info out there so put in the work and you will learn a lot--learning never ends in this game!!

I am not asking anybody to explain it all to me. Just that somebody might know a link or two where I could begin my research. Browsing this forum randomly doesnt seem like the best way...

So you think someone else should browse and search the net and find it for you?

I must say I am surprised that a Mod and long time member like you handles a question like that.
I thought the whole idea of a forum is to contribute where you can and since I have little knowledge of the vintage world I would like some of the more experienced members to help me out. I have a site in danish, that has provided me with basic knowledge but I figure that there are much better american ones.

My answer to your question the first post is to do a search--there is a ton of info out there and your question on how to tell a dial type is a bit broad. Do you have any idea how many dials Rolex made? Learning about vintage takes tons of time and lots of research. Secondly- Asking about links to relumed dials--how do you think a member would find one? They cetainly don't have them saved to their computer. So they should go do a search for you so you don't have to?? The internet is a huge place--a ton of info--take the time and do a search and you will find what you are looking for!

SonSqad, welcome here. Steelerfan65s a great guy and along with some of the pro forumers here is indispensable to us beginners quest for vintage knowledge. Am sure he's just joking since you asked a very broad question. I suggest reading the old threads here that have covered similar questions and also google up for broad vintage and general vintage collecting info that's readily available. When you know which vintage models interest you you wouldn't find a better place or people than these to add to your vintage knowledge.

There are only 2 things that you can do to learn about vintage Rolex watches. Take your time, and read this vintage section everyday. You can also visit VRF and read it daily. TIME is what it takes to learn about vintage, and we are all still learning.

I would also suggest reading on this site. It will DEFINITELY not answer all your questions, but it is a decent place to start.

In my limited experience, I start with a reference number and start from there.
The archives on here are a great resource. Most questions have been answered before, but you get awesome guys like SteelerFan65 and Tools, who help out newbies like me.

Welcome!!!

Welcome SonSquad to what is IMO the best Rolex and watch forum out there.

But you really need to narrow down your question. This is all Steelerfan65, our well known and highly respected moderator has suggested. So perhaps a little more respect please

You wouldn't dream of going into a car dealership and say " can you tell me about wheels or dashboards. Or an art gallery and say " can you tell me about oil paintings". Their first question in reply would always be which model or which artist or era.

The first thing I did was visit a few vintage shops to seek out a watch I liked the look of and thought I could afford. Next was tons of reading and research. Next was asking specific questions on TRF and VRF. Next was contacting knowledgeable members to see if they new of any collectors who may be selling. I now have some beautiful watches I am really proud to own

But there are no short cuts and it's a long old process. However, if you are truly interested in vintage, then it will be an enjoyable journey and TRF is here to help

doubleredseadweller.com is a wonderful site and I have already learned a lot.

A site like that was all I asked for and I think it is great way to start. I didnt mean to disrespect anyone - I think steelerfan misunderstood my question and that is why we started out on a wrong foot (english is not my native language so perhaps it was a bit unclear). Anyway, thanks a lot and if I can help with anything let me know. I worked for an AD for 2 years so I know a bit about how that business works.

I read through the replies before responding.

Son, I am new too. I ask several questions after researching my watch until I exhausted my limit of understanding. I received gracious replies. I suggest—remember I am and extreme newbie—looking between the band/bracelet lugs for very faint numbers. Maybe it will identify your watch ref. Then you can search and, and I promise, find several pictures that may help.

In my very short time researching Rolex watches I have learned that the versions/types are almost endless. But, If you research you can get very close.

Please send me a direct message with your details if you wish and I will help with the research to your question.

Good luck...
