opinions please and help on my soon to be 1675.
SO i have bought a GMT Master from 1964, picking it up in the next few days.
I have lusted after one for sooo long! Living in Australia things are far less common. Here is the scenario. I am buying it from a vintage watch collector and dealer who has had it and serviced it for over the last 20 years ( so that takes us back to 1990) and i get to pick it up and view it in person. So it is inl as good a condition as you could possibly get and been well looked after. It has a matte dial with the big 24 hour hand and matching regular hands ( put on together i presume). The patina on all is very even. Now i know the is a replacment dial and hands but the dial says Swiss T<25 rather than 'swiss' like a service dial. ( anyone shed any light on that?) i am 99.99999 % sure this watch had a gloss dial and small 24 hour hand being from 1964 BUT the new dial and hands were probably put in in the 70/80's i reckon judging from appearance. This was probably common practice during a service) but any opinions are welcome So what does one do? keep it the way it is as the dial and hands are matching for a 1675 but just in an older serialed case ( pre 66/67, when this Dial and hand configuartion was introduced) or ( i love the Matte dial) keep the matte dial and try to find a small GMT 24 hour hand? Thanks for listening and what would you do? cheers

yeah i meant gilt.. absolutely right. Yeah i guess if i went fro a small hand i would have to get a gilt dial too to make i right. TI am happy the way it is, as i prefer the matte dial personally but wanted to hear other opinons and personal thoughts on it.

If it's a 1964( i assume you have checked the serial & caseback to confirm) then a gilt/gloss dial is the go....Swiss T>25 would be be ok (later gilt/gloss ) did come out with this version. if your dial is matte( later service dial), then that is fine as well.... IMHO, just enjoy the watch and maybe if you wish, keep an eye out for a gilt/gloss dial oh yes, pics would be great !! cheers Mark |
