Daytona Bezel Reflection Effect - SS vs WG

Okay.

I always loved the way my WG Daytona Bezel reflect things. The reflection on the bezel always look sharp. It looks like a plethora of straight beams getting out of the watch. Besides cosmetic differences it's THE difference between SS and WG.

I do have an SS Daytona and the bezel reflection isn't as good as the WG version. On the SS the reflection looks like a Bad mirror reflection, with distorsions.

I was wondering what causes this kind of difference? Material? Polishing technique? Finishing?

Anyone?

Well - Gold (Au) has a lower chromatic dispersion than Chromium (Cr) and Chromium is what is added to make iron become stainless steel - there are mutiple grades of stainless steel available but all rely on Chromium for reflectivity.

The difference in dispersion is what makes each metal appear to have different reflective properties.

So I've been wondering why pay so much more for WG while SS looks about the same and now there's the reason!

White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, usually nickel, manganese or palladium.

Shouldn't the refractive data take into account the presence of these metals.

Does anyone know the alloy Rolex uses for white gold?

I realized tha the SS bezel edge is kinda soft when compared to the WG version.

Maybe the whole bezel is a little curved. What do you think?
