Advice on First Purchase
Hi,
Sorry to make my first post a request. I am in the process of aquiring my first Rolex and have decided upon a DateJust. To me that just IS rolex. I have never really considdered another model. Well, I hadn't untill coming on here every day for the last while. I have been looking in the Sales bit - but find it difficult to find someone selling in the UK. I live in North East England. I have just been and tried on a rolex for the first time today. A local store has two that I like the look of. Both are two-tone with light faces. Helpfully the store has them online so I can show you the exact ones I tried on. They both have the little diamond markers - which doesnt appeal to me, but doesnt put me off. I would prefer the bar markers. Anyway, the two I tried were simmilar looking and simmilar price. Both say they are 16233. and are of a simmilar age. One says 1990 and one says 1991. Just wanted to get an idea what kind of value you guys would attribute to such a watch to give me an idea as I am new to this. Neither has papers - which I realise is not great. I dont intend upon selling it - but you know how that goes, and selling is much easier with papers I understand. A little look on ebay (which may have been ill advised??) seems to show simmilar watches, some 5 years or so younger, being cheaper than the store I have been to. Here are the two anything you can tell me would be great before I go and get one. Or if you have reccomendations on trusted sellers in my part of the world. Thanks, Sean |

There are various dial options for the watch, and a light (white) dial isn't hard to find. The 16233 is a great watch, but I am leaning a bit towards the newer model, 116233, for it has the super jubilee bracelet. Be patient, and I am sure the watch will come up at the sales corner. It'd be faster if you contacted one of the trusted sellers, DavidSW, justrolexes, bodypump, or LawrenceB directly. Not sure about shipping the watch to the UK though. Good luck w/ your search, and let us know.

Please, please, please steer clear of eBay. Especially for your first purchase.
I would really avoid the diamond model. If you don't like them...don't settle on a that watch. You will truly regret it. Truly. |

I say go to an AD and buy new. That way you can pick the dial and bracelet you want from the Rolex master catalog and get your perfect watch. It may cost you more money but in the end you'll be happier. If it is money you're worried about ask for discount as some will give it to you. If they don't, move on to the next dealer until you find a good deal !

Hi Sean - welcome to the forums.
I suggest as it is your first purchase to buy at an authorised dealer. This will give you a much better buying experience and complete peace of mind. I have bought both my rolexes from ADs, this has probably cost me a premium but feel it was totally worth it in terms of the ease of transaction and peace of mind. |

Hi,
Thanks for the comments. After doing a bit more research I think I will hang on for one without the diamonds on the dial. I think the hammering I take from my friends will be quite enough without there being diamonds involved... I wouldn't buy one from ebay, but thought it might be a useful tool in determining the going rate for this model. The two I tried on were advertised for around £3500. The shop selling them does offer some guarentees and is a well repected jewlers in my area that has been going for 10's of years and has multiple branches, so I dont have any worries in buying from them. They give the wathces a good going over before selling them so I feel totally safe buying from them. They did say that they have a requests book so perhaps going back to them with a more specific request might be an option. Let them do the legwork. I would love to have the newer model with the superjubilee but think that the budget will hold me back on that. Simmilarly with buying new. I think that pre loved (which seems to be the tem on here) is the only option. I will contact the trusted sellers on here and ask their advice -tho it seems risky to have one shipped from the US... |

There are millions of DJ's out there. If you can be a little patient, you will find exactly what you want. As to the diamonds, I immediately suspect "aftermarket' when I see the diamond dials. Rolex makes a version, but there are lots of inexpensive aftermarket dials out there. Unless you know it's authentic Rolex, assume aftermarket. The diamond dials actually work nicely and are understated look when the bezel has no diamonds.
The stick dials are probably the most common, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a look you like. Good luck. |

If you go into an AD to look at the master catalog you can find your ideal combination and then try and find the same one elsewhere online

Datejust is a great watch. I don't think it resell as well as sports model. You might be able to negotiate.

Have a look here. Prices are a tad high, IMO, but they usually have a good selection:
