Do you take your watch off to go through airport screening?
I just got my first Rolex, a GMTIIc last week, and I am going to San Francisco this week. Do you guys take your watch off when going through the scanners? I would really prefer not to take it off and put it in the plastic bin.
Experience? Advice? Thanks, AJ |

Typically I do not take the watch off. It will set off the metal detectors in some airports and other it will not. I guess its a function of how the local TSA staff set the machines.
If it does set off the detectors, I can take it off, pass thru the machine and am waiting at the other end of the X-ray machine for my watch. If you take it off and put it thru as a matter of course, you can be separated from it as propel ahead of you have issues going thru the metal detectors/pat downs ect... that may have your watch sitting unattended at the other end of the conveyor belt! |

Do they then make you take it off and put it in a plastic bin after the detector goes off?

To avoid any hassle in case it sets off the detectors I put mine in a case like this in my carry-on:
Then wear it after inspections. |

I use the same case then neatly placed in my carry-on. The last thing I want is my Rolex exposed in a bin after being asked to remove it and it rolls through x-ray while I'm delayed from someone being patted down, or such, in the metal detector area. Takes away an opportunity for it to be stolen.

Just not worth the aggravation of being stopped and frisked whilst holding everyone else up as you remove your big chunky (obviously lots of metal) Rolex like some newbie holiday maker travelling for the first time I was once held up by some guy who, on multiple attempts to get through, pulled more metal objects out of his pockets than a magician pulls rabbits and typically I was late for my flight. If you have ever seen "Up in the Sky" with George Clooney, you soon learn which queue to get in.... GOLDEN RULE.....no old folks, no kids and no once a year holiday makers............just go for the queue with the most business guys in who travel every week... |

As for me i dont remove my watch. What i do is i place my hand in between my body (just like doing the excuse me motion) when you pass thru the detector. The metal detector doesnt get sensitive with that. Somebody told me the technique and it works.
Airports like in tokyo, sydney, la, sfo vancouver and hongkong no sound... Gmt1, gmt2c ss, explorer2, tudor prncdate |

put my watch in either
1. carry on, inside a clear zip lock bag along with whatever liquid or toothpaste im carrying, after security i put the watch back on. 2. put my watch in a pocket in which that jacket is being scanned.

every airport operates slightly different it seems, in the UK at Stansted, Luton & Gatwick i asked & was advised to remove it. Now, seeing as the security scan system moves quickly & many people are milling about, i see no point in taking the risk of being told to remove it if i set the alarm off & drawing attention to myself, then stand there being frisked once more whilst my watch flies solo through the x-ray machine & out the other side at the mercy of any thieving opportunist !!!!! i always remove mine in plenty of time, out of sight of others & slip it into a suede pouch & then into my hand luggage, along with my wallet & phone...giving attitude to airport staff is pointless & usually a no win situation, why take the risk

I fly about 2x a month commercially and I haven't been asked to take it before. I haven't set off the alarm either (first time I went through I was sure it would.) Very strange since my belt sets it off a lot of the time.

Airport scanners are set to extra sensitive here in the DC area so you really don't have much choice to take off a Rolex ss sport watch. I've been able to go through with titanium watches like me JLC NSA, but again, if the TSA agent sees the watch half of the time they ask you to take it off.
I mean how hard it it? You have to take out your wallet, keys, perhaps coins - I just put it all - including the watch - in my laptop bag well ahead of time. I travel fast, hard and plenty. Nothing worse that people finicking stuff and holding up the line. |
