Vintage...how is this defined?

recently got more interested in watches and this forum....have an 116610LN, sub c for sports and semi-dress attire and a cellini 1550/8 (circa 2001) for dress up and more formal occasions. How does the membership define a "vintage watch." Thanks for educating a forum newbi!

Welcome to the forum. To be this honest thread has came up so many times it will make your head spin. There is a search bar in the top right corner it can be your best friend. If I am not mistaken this thread came up last week and should be at the bottom of the page. Good luck

well, depends how you want to look at it relative to ones lifespan too...If you are 18 than all of the modern discontinued models can be considered as getting into vintage for you v/s if ones 90 I guess. I would say any discontinued model would be sort of vintage but if you were looking at strictly vintage for today, then it will have to be the plexi crystal ones or earlier.

Here is how i define it;

- it looks old and beatup
- nobody says 'nice watch' except collectors. this includes all staff at mayors.
- it loses a lot of time
- the band is wobbly
- 25 year old stock brokers who recieved their new subC from their father-in-law think it is an old piece of junk.

The only one of those that has trouble "fitting" to me is the 16600. I guess it is because there is no real visual difference between a V-serial and a 25 year-old model.

I just can't bring myself to think of them as vintage. Collectable yes!
I don't think of my 15 year old Zenith Daytona as vintage or my SD both out of production. My first Daytona new in 1983 & my 30 year old GMT fit the bill. For now I feel there is still a fine line between collector watches & vintage.

Good point.......I guess I agree that it is. There are a few sapphire crystal watches that fall into the "vintage" category. I guess that a few 16600s and 16660s would also fall into this category if they were starting to show a bit of patina

I agree with acrylic camp as well but also think there are some borderline. Here is my 88' 16520 Mk1 Porcelain Floater- sapphire vintage IMHO!

I have to agree, probably not 16600's though. But 16660's for sure, also, what about a 1990 16570 Rail dial, or a 16570 creme with black plots (very rare)

Very cool Ken! Love those Zenith's, I'm debating wether to get a 98' zenith 16520, or a gilt GMT

+ 1
Not all vintage watches are collectable. Not all collectable watches are vintage (based on the forum yardstick).

Well if I got 2, would be a 1655 MK1 & a 1675 Gilt my buddy has. Also, I'm trying to get my dad to buy a 1665 DRSD, but he's not a vintage guy
