Remember the Days of Begging To Buy A Certain Rolex???

My how times have changed . I have 3 in my collection that have interesting stories of how they were acquired:

Sub LV - Did some major sucking up at the Big T in BOston. The manager knew she had me and was making me beg big time but I did wind up being "allowed" to give them 5K of my hard earned dollars. I had tried buying it from an AD in Dallas prior and was actually told no go unless I bought another simultaneously. Logic being they needed to leverage their assets as best they could.

SS Daytona - Actually a pleasant story. Long time AD friend I had asked and within 5 months got the call.

Milgauss - Liked the different look when it first came out. At first it was pretty hard to find any of them. Big T actually said and I'm not joking to be considered for one you had to purchase 125K worth of watches in the past. As much as I wanted to punch the little twirp in the face for that comment common sense and the fear of jail got the better of me.

I guess the bottom line is these times have definitely changed the landscape. I even remember the Patek 5980 Nautilus Chrono when it first came out. I asked about it and was literally laughed at. No way no how was I nearly important enough to get one. Now they are all over the DC area in windows everywhere.

Anyone else have any good embarassing stories of sucking up to AD's to get the toy they wanted?

I wouldn't do it. It's my money, they can work for my business; there is always another AD and another watch and usually you can get what you want at the price you want (if you are reasonable and sensible). I think you did well to restrain yourself!

I have never begged anybody to take my money for anything, let alone a superfluous luxury item. As much as I like Rolex, and watches in general, if the seller is not absoultely thrilled to sell me an item, I will not buy it.

I can remember when the Exp 1 was scarce. You had to be on a list and hardly ever saw them for sale on the watch forums. I can also remember when the blue 16613 was hard to find and Exp 2's were hard to find.

Never happened, never will. I will never beg an AD - much less so anyone at Turdneau - to sell me anything at MSRP.

Nope.

I'm not a begging sort of person.

I've had my share of "7 year waiting list" comments upon enquiring on 116520 availability but those days are looooong gone.

I remember begging my wife to let me buy a Sub, but that's about it. :)

I get your point though. Rolex have controlled supply on certain watches in the past to create an artificial demand and a climate more likely to sell watches at full price.

I might beg for a huge discount, but not for the privilege of buying a watch at full price or even close. Like others said, they should be begging you to buy a high end watch in a global recession.

Agreed, SS Daytonas and the other models are not exactly sitting in display windows, but they are definitely easier to get these days. I don't know if it's due to the demand being lower, the economy being down, the supply going up... Or maybe a combinaion of all those things.

An AD at Tyson's Corner put me on the list for an 16610LV in 2004-05. In the interim I moved to Texas and purchased an Cousteau Aquatimer, a Zenith, and an 18K YG Tag. So when the salesperson called about a year later I thanked him for remembering me and said am no longer interested but thanks anyway. I bought a mint LV this year (M series).

I don't think I have ever wanted a watch bad enough to beg for it. I'll go elsewhere until I get the one I want.

I was offered each of those 3 Rolexes by my AD without asking. I did, however, have to hound them a bit to get my PAM249.

Nope, this is the same reason why I won't wait in long lines for new releases of tech stuff.

I think that's probably the right reaction. What's wrong with a store that doesn't want to sell you stuff? If they don't have it in stock, surely telling you that straight instead of behaving like pretentious wankers would have been the more sensible option.

If they want to make judgement calls based on who they think their customers should be, more fool them. They can waste their time dealing with the suited loser who's 200 grand in debt and is trying to impress a bimbo; while the builder who just got off work, is still covered in concrete dust and has a collection of several Rolexes at home, will just deal with another AD.
