Blue Bull

Blue Bull,

I was in South Africa summer of 2003 (time flys!). Went there for a 2 week hunting trip. Best 2 weeks of my life. Was all spot and stalk. Really regged hill country in Zulu Natal, just close to Petersmarsberg (sic?). Hunted Kudu, Wildebeast, Impala, Warthog, and Monkeys. All meat was donated to local village and the monkeys were hunted for pest/disease control. Definately plan on getting back to South AFrica or Namibia for another hunting trip soon. On the trip I also visited Krueger Game preserve for a couple of days.

Loved the South African Wine!

For those fellow gun nuts: Used a Winchested Model 70, pre-64, in .375 H & H with 270 gr. bullets for the hunt. Carried a Browning Hi-Power 9mm handgun (provided to me by my PH) for back up. For Monkey control, used a CZ bolt action .22 LR, with suppresor and subsonic rounds.

Dang Chad,

I'm on vacation in San Francisco right now at the MLB All-Star game and you make this trip seem like I went to the neighborhood children's park down the street!

No 1911s.

For Thailand, Afghanistan, Kosovo deployments issued Beretta M-9 (model 92).
In Iraq, issued SIG 226 9mm and also Glock 17 for backup.
In Cambodia carried a Colt 1908 Hammerless (that was stamped "Shanghai Municipal Police" and was originally issued to SMP in 1927) in .380 for back up. Beside AK-47 also had .45 cal M-3 Grease Gun, one of my favorites for work in a Jungle environment. Very reliable, but only good to about 50 meters. Easy to break down and throw in Rucksack. Of course would have prefered shotguns (Rem 870s), if budget permitted and were accessiable, for my police officers in Cambodia. Much better for what we were doing than the AK-47.

Prefer 9mm over .45 for the larger magazine capacity. More suitable for combat environments where many times it is about suppresive fire and we also found the 9mm to have better penetration, especially through car doors and light body armor. Overall prefer the SIG and Glock lineups as the 1911 safety can be a liability. Do not like any type of safety on a pistol. Found that in high stress situations, you can forget to take off. In a extreme stress encounter, small motor skills disapear. Also if in a close quarter confrontation, such as encountered in CQB, where as you may use the handgun itself as a blunt force instrument at times, the looser grip on the 1911 - due to thumb placement - can result in weapon coming out of your hand.

I do like the 1911s for shooting at the Range, the way you can customize them and the historical significance. If properly trained in their usage they can also be a good home defense firearm and CCW.

My personnel favorite though for civilian CCW, besides the Glock, is the HK P7 series. The P7s are a real work of engineering, very safe to carry, and the way the squeze cock is manipulated, very easy to do even under high stress situations. Also very fast magazine changes due to the squeze cock/slide release. But, only magazine capacity of 8+1.

I'm with ya on the usability of the M9. I'm not a fan of Glock, but i do like the Springfield XD. I have the subcompact in 9mm and shoots a very tight group.

I don't care for Glocks, but I love my SIGs (228 and 232)!

Yeah, SIGs are great weapons. I personnally own a SIG 220 (.45) in Stainless Steel with some Rosewood Grips. Never had a problems with the SIG 226 (9mm) I carried in Iraq. But, found compared to a Glock you had to be more attentive to keeping the magazines cleans and checking the mag springs. Very accurate. My brother is in the DSS and carries the SIG 229 (9mm) which he really likes as well. SIG are pretty darn accurate right out of the box. Been wanting to send mine into SIG for a custom trigger job, which I am told is well worth the money.
