New member, looking for advice on an AirKing

Hi All,
First post to the forum so thought I'd say Hi :)

I've been looking to replace a watch I had stolen (an old Hugo Boss model) since earlier in the year, the only thing I've spotted which I like is the Rolex AirKing, SS with the black face (1400M model). It's actually very similar to the Hugo Boss I had :)

Currently having the internal debate about whether it's worthwhile and a good time to buy - my thinking is that these things don't seem to be selling well at the moment (given the economic climate in the UK), so the prices are likely to be at a low point.

Prices for the 1400M seem to range from around £1300 up to £1900, depending on quality and condition.

Any suggestions or opinions on whether now is a good time to buy an older watch? Good investment?

Welcome to TRF. Based on your comments it seems your looking to buy a pre owned. The price for pre owned will be more dependant on the condition than economics. I'm not up on the prices in the UK but if you find one in good condition compare the price to your local AD pricing for new and make your decision from that reference point. Good Luck on your hunt.

It is my opinion, buying a pre-owned rolex is a great investment. I would suggest looking at the Rolex Date model "15000" as well. These are classic and bring consistent prices, should you decide to sell.

I guess this is what makes it hard for me to gauge, the dealer prices for new models are far in excess of the pre-owned prices.

That leads me to believe this maybe isn't a model which holds it's value particularly well - maybe even dropping in value...

From what I've researched, it seems most Rolex tend to hold their price or appreciate, but perhaps this model isn't quite so sought after.

As this would be an almost-daily wear, I'd be happy to stand a little depreciation (servicing costs, scratches etc). I'm really just looking for confirmation that I'm not set to lose, say, 500 or more over the next 2 years.

It seems unlikely, but thought it worth an ask :)

That's something I'd not thought of, thanks, I shall have a look

Rolex watches sell in good as well and not so good economic times. Historically, people do not lose money on a Rolex if they purchase properly. I know many are more interested in the potential future value rather then the love of the watch. They may be better off investing in pork belly futures.

On the used market the Rolex Airking is the best Rolex sport value available as a percentage of new to going prices on the used market. The 14000M is an outstanding value.

I am sure this has been discussed elsewhere but I can't seem to find it. Why the continual slams against the AirKing....poor mans Rolex...entry level Rolex? Isn't the 114200 movement used in the Sub...and in other Rolex models?

i think on this forum the AK is given it's due for it's place in Rolex history but its not a Sub or GMT. I don't think it ever has been or ever will be as popular as those. Hence, it's a great value and entry level. Nothing wrong with that, there has to be an entry level watch.

Yes, but isn't the identical movement used in other models?
I understand that there are differences. For example a movement with a "date" function probably has a different movement number even though the underlying movement may still be the 3130. Also there will be some differences in the case of a dive watch.
These are important but nevertheless, at the heart of it all is the movement.

The old Air King at 34mm is too small for many. Yet another consideration for why it is not more popular.

Do your research, and find an original watch that is free from excessive polishing. (Original means all the parts are original Rolex rather than non-Rolex replacements. I’m not a horologist, so I can’t tell, so I would try to buy a newer watch rather than an older one.)

My first watch was a TAG Carrera brand new from the TAG store. Retail price was about AU$4,000. Two years later, after moderate wearing, I reckon I could only get $500 - $1,000 from a second-hand dealer. Losing 80% of your value will never happen to a pre-owned, well-bought Rolex, and because the Air King is so affordable (compared to other Rolexes), I can’t see how you’d lose $2,000 - $3,000 on a $4,000 watch. Go for a Rolex, and let its value take care of itself.

That is very true...but size and looks are matters of personal taste. The movement is at the heart of what makes a Rolex a Rolex
Therefore, my original question...what other models of Rolex use the movement in the 114200?

You may want to start a new thread instead of digging old threads.

Edit: I see you did. Great. Sorry.

Continual slams against AK as poor man's Rolex? I don't see that here at all, criticism is based on the small size of the old and the new one's unorthodox dial, the movement is rock solid, as are all Rolexes, and it even has a Faraday cage so technically no issues with it.

If you have smaller wrists or prefer a vintage style with modern features definitely consider a 34mm AK 14000, 14000m. You can also consider the AK 5500 if you want a full on vintage experience with the acrylic crystal.

I think these 34mm watches are hidden gems as the new 34mm Oyster Perpetuals have been given unnecessary girth, it wears more like a 36 now.

If you come across a good example (free from inept polishing, no excessive bracelet stretch, watch out for redials), pick it up! You wont regret it.

Air-King model 114210 was my first Rolex. Great watch. 34mm might be on the smaller side for some, so I would definitely figure out how to try on the specific model you are interested in before purchasing.

I would only buy from an extremely reputable seller. No Ebay, no randoms for me. Be patient and wait for something to come up that's in great condition. I would resist the urge to save a couple bucks by buying something that is in less than excellent condition.
