First purchase questions

Well after my warm welcome in the newbie forum I thought I would post some questions here as advised.

First, what is a grey market watch exactly, Rolex or otherwise? I have decided I will go with an AD for my first buy, but I'm a curious sort. I've been given the first/AD advice here and think it is my best choice.

We have two AD's in town and I wonder if they compete with each other on price usually. Do most AD's deal at all? I will likely go with a Sub Date or DJ in steel. One dealer here is an upscale Jeweler and the other deals strictly in higher end watches of many kinds, but doesn't service them. Should I start going in to visit, as I am about 18 Months out yet? We have another AD two hours away and wondering about him too. I hate to be a tire kicker, but I am really ready to start getting a close look at what I want.

Lastly for now, are there first buy do's and dont's you folks can share with me? Good experiences, lessons learned, regrets, anything would be appreciated. Just to be clear this will be a cash purchase from an AD for certain. I really Look forward to your feedback.

Thanks in advance,
Patrick

Too many questions there Patrick...

That's enough material to keep the forum going for 6 months or more. I'll tackle the first paragraph.....

A grey market dealer is a legitimate dealer of fine watches. They do not have a contract with Rolex corporate so are not "Authorised Dealers", but they generally get their products from AD's who move their products so they can get more. A grey market can be a good deal, however, you will not usually get the warranty papers since they become a "third party" and the warranty is voided. A good grey dealer may have a fine watchmaker service center themselves and provide their own warranty. The Rolex Service Center will service any genuine Rolex bought through a grey market dealer, just not warranty work.

Do not confuse the grey market with the fraud market.

Hi Patrick,

I'm not as knowledgeable as most in this forum but I can tell you that you should get some sort of discount on the watch.

I was in no hurry so I checked with several out of town and out of state AD's looking for the best deal. When I was satisified at the best price I was going to get I went back to my local AD (who wasn't that interested in discounting the watch). I told him the best price I had found and advised I would prefer to support my local AD but I had to go with the best deal.

I did not mention the specific AD's, only the prices they offered. He suddenly found he was able to discount the watch and beat their best prices. It was all very cordial and I have since ordered two more Rolexes.

I believe in most states you can also have it shipped out of state to a friend/relative and avoid the sales tax. This can be a tremendous savings, further reducing the cost of the watch!
