Icon5 Panerai to keep my rolex company?! Important question!!! need advice!

Hi fellow Rolex enthusiasts,

I have an important question for you:

Back Story

I have always been a fan of watches (particuarly rolex, audemars, pateks, hublots, breitling etc...) and have wanted to, over time, collect many watches.

At first, through my highschool years, I started small. I started with a peice of junk aliminum bvlgari diagno, then bought an ebel 911, somewhere along picked up a raymond weil etc.

Then, I bought a breitling (this was a years ago before they became so showy). I loved my breitling and decided it was time to take the rest of the watches, aside from the breitling, and trade up to a rolex ss dj.

Ever since I love my rolex dj, and only take it off to wear my breitling when it is time to get really rough and rugged. (or sometimes traveling to uncertain places).

Since, it has been my conviction that I only want to wear a rolex for the rest of my life... trading one watch for the next model when the time is right. (eventually a yg daytona).

FINALLY THE POINT:

I never heard of panerai, paid any attention to panerai's, untill I came on this forums. I noticed rolex people liked panerais and i thought they must be cool.

I looked at pictures online and really didnt get the appeal. yes they looked manly, and understated, but not special. not dressy, nor intricate etc.

Well, my pops just picked up a brand new 1950 and well... I think I love panerai now.

I wouldnt, and couldnt replace my rolex, but maybe its nice to change it up and wear a strap once and a while instead of a bracelet.

I am leaning towards a power reserve PAM 241 40MM.

I dont have the money right now, however I am considering picking one up on grey market with cash + breitling to get the price down.

Anyone think this is a good idea? Anyone think panerai is a fad, and maybe I should borrow my dads for a few months strait then move on? Anyone have an other reasons to add to my arguement for picking one up?

I would personally save up your cash and just buy it when you can get all the money together. It sounds like your breitling was your first serious watch id keep it if i were you its a special piece.

my first serious watch, an auto one , is the Tag Heuer Kirium. I am still keeping it because it is very dear and special to me.

If I were allowed to keep only one watch, this would be it.

For reference, that would mean giving up these.

It's a great idea
You'll love it

BUT try the 44 mm and not the 40mm

When talking about Panerai, 44 is the rule

A fad ? No way
Some people said it was a fad in 2000. they were pretty new but today it will be very hard to find anybody left who still calls it a fad.
They made history !
They have 8 inhouse movements and are very popular, they will never dissapear

DO NOT GET A 40MM! 44/45/47 only! I prefer the handwinds and Sausage dials, though dont mind the sandwich dials on some models.

I think they are great watches.

Take your time, and try to do it without trading.

In the meantime look around they have a number of different models.

I would not buy a 40mm Panerai. If get one buy one with true Panerai roots and that means size! For me-47mm all the way!! I might even get the new 372 when it comes out myself- a true throwback to the 6152-1.

I think they make a great pair. 351 was my choice--light (because of titanuim), 1950 case, gold hands, sandwich dial). I say go get one!

I love my Pam 104. My GMT II most of my wrist time but I do enjoy wearing the Pam. Best of luck on your decision.

I nearly bought a 40 because the 44's seemed so big (many years ago). I am so glad I bought the 44 (Pam 111), I would have ended up selling the 40. The 44 is very comfortable and speaks "Panerai." I also wear a sub c.

Not everyone can get away with a 44mm Panerai. Some of the 44+ mm wrist shots you see on the forums look ridiculous, like a boy wearing Dad's shoes.

Nothing wrong with a 40mm Panerai if thats what fits best. Personally I think the PAM241 is a great choice.

One word of warning: I haven't checked the specs on that one, but with many Panerai you are paying a hefty premium for an ETA (or Valjoux) movement.

I would never sell my first watch, EVER. Panerai is a great watch, I would just save up for a model that i like.

Panerai plays well with Rolex and Breitling

First I have to echo the sentiments of nearly all the other posts and recommend STRONGLY against a 40mm Panerai.

For me Panerai means basic and Breitling means busy but being an in-house collector freak I had to wait awhile before I could pull the trigger on either.

Here's my PAM 312 1950 case with P.9000 Manifattura movement;

and Breitling Navitimer with the Breitling 01 caliber.

I think they fit well with my latest catch; a yg Daytona

You've got the right idea of being patient and picking them off one at a time.
Stay the course.
Best,
Mike
