GMT Master II - C or Sub 116610LN???

Am Very close to buying one of the following.

I travel abroad alot so the GMT function would be great. I'm just wondering apart from this what the differences are between the two watches?

I'm only interested in the Steel black dial Sub.

Is the lume any different, and what about the clasp?

Thanks

Duncan

I like the DssD, but its just too big for an everyday watch, probably isnt practical enough for me.

Very few differences between the two. You have polished centre links on the GMT as opposed to brushed on the Sub; the GMT uses Rolex's standard sports clasp with Easylink (an extra fold-out half link), whilst the Sub uses Glidelock (about an inch worth of fine adjustment on the clasp); the case lugs are marginally thicker on the Sub, as is the caseback; the GMT uses green-glowing SuperLuminova paint, the Sub uses blue-glowing Chromalight paint.

Of course, the two use different movements too, the cal. 3186 in the GMT (independent hour hand plus 24hr hand), the cal. 3135 in the Sub (quick set date). Both excellent watches. I myself would choose the GMT IIc

I like the SubC. I will have a GMTIIC soon but the Sub is now my watch of choice even over my DSSD. I thing the GMT is dressier but the SubC IMO is the perfect Rolex. I wasn't sure about the pcls on the GMT.

Which is the better clasp? or is it just down to taste? apart from the color what is the difference between superluminova and chromalight?

would I be right in thinking they both sell for around the same pre-owned?

Both are very good, but the Glidelock just pips it, in my opinion, As for the lume, not much difference again - some people report Chromalight as lasting slightly longer. Subs are marginally higher on the pre-owned market at the moment, but the GMT IIc has been in production for a couple more years

your right, it is a really tough decision. Need to put them both on my wrist and see which one I like the best.

I do like the lume on the sub. But overall im easing towards the GMT.

are there any other watches worth looking at? similar to both the GMT and Sub.

Not necessarily rolex.

New Explorer II and the new cal. 8500 based Omega Planet Ocean. Both are very much at a similar level of quality, although they might be hard to get hold of considering how new they are!

If no other Rolex, I'd go Sub ... for me, it is THE Rolex. No real logic, other than the Glidelock clasp. Also, I like the feeling of the Sub's bezel a bit better (120 vs. 24 clicks if I am not mistaken).

Polished enter links. They are brushed on the Sub. The GMT shows scratches more.

Don't sweat it - either will be fantastic. Flip a coin and be done with it.

If it was my only watch. I would lean towards the Sub.

You can't go wrong either way.. Both are fantastic, I can say so because I have owned both GMTIIc then flipped for the Sub-C... My vote goes to the Sub

Do you travel more than you dive?

If yes, the GMT time zone feature will be of more use to you.

Thats what im thinking.

how good is it as an everyday watch? does it wear well. I've had my seamaster for 3/4 years now and apart from the underside of the clasp it really isnt showing much wear at all. I always have a watch on my wrist, including sleeping, showering, etc etc.

Personal preference, since I just bought one, but for me the GMT. Yes, the Sub is the more iconic Sub, but that also means a lot more people have one. I was worried about the PCLs and "blinginess" but after trying it on I realized just how small the links are. Seriously, it is one thin bracelet and the links are only in the middle. (Also, after a while the polish mellows out, anyway).

The GMT gives you an extra complication, that besides being just something cool to look at or brag about (300m depth rating, anyone?) is actually useful if you travel.

Again, I had both in mind, but when I tried on the GMT I was sold instantly. Do the same and good luck with your choice!

I originally wanted the GMT IIc and i still think it is fantastic. Sometimes when i'm hanging out with my cousin who has one i get envious because it just has that sparkle that sometimes mine lacks. But at the end of the day i can't beat the every day versatility of the Sub. I adjust my clasp constantly to fit my wrist better especially during the hot summer days and i'm usually dressed more casually so the sub just fits a bit better. But the GMT is what got me into the AD.

You will see scratches on the clasp and PCLs. If you are ok with that...it's an everyday watch!

Eveybody has a preference, and some have both.

I would recomend the GMTIIC, because that's the one I choose.

Either way you can't go wrong.

Good luck with your hunt.

Your call of course, I gad a GMTIIC but at the end I prefer the simpler dial of the SubC sans the green hand/text, the bracelet without PLC and the better clasp. Both are oustanding pieces though and can't-go-wrong choices.

This has to be one of the toughest decisions to make in the SS Sports Model Line... I have owned both and now currently only own the Sub C. Without the PCL's it just seems more like an everyday up for anything watch

If I traveled, GMT II - NO QUESTION. That said, I own both and prefer the SubC because it simply 'wears' better. The clasp on the SubC is longer than the GMT, so if you have smaller wrists (I have 7.5) it may be a factor.
