Interesting Paragraph on eBay Page Regarding Fakes

Quote:
May 10th 2007 Mike Korpi from Portland Orgean came back from China with 8 fake Rolex watches. he paid $14.40 each, however when US customs found them he was fined $55,300. This was said to be the value of the counterfiet goods. Mike Korpi said they where for his children and grandchildren. Rolex can sue and demand $100,000 for each watch if they wanted. I dont think they will, but either way this should be a lesson to all.
First, didn't know you could be fined like that.

Second...Rolex Corp. can actually sue a person if they are found in possession of a fake watch?

Yea, I remember that. The guy had his fine done away with after consulting with an attorney and huge local media coverage. He was on TV everyday whining about it.

Considering that fakes and boot-legging of DVD's, CD's and Rolexes (just to name a few) cost corporate America (and the world) BILLIONS a year that number seems about right. Let's hope they win. Less fakes and less fakers.

I'll do you one better, in an internal Rolex USA memo dated December 1999 and I quote:

"As a result of our continuing efforts, the U.S. District Court in San Diego recently determined that Rolex watches sold, or offered for sale, with non-Rolex replacement parts (e.g. bezels, dials, or bracelets) are COUNTERFEITS."

Are they saying that my 40 yr old OP on a strap [with Rolex buckle] is a fake??? Is this really Rolex attitude??
Regards

I wouldn't consider it a fake, unless you tried to pass the strap off as an original Rolex part. Then it would be counterfeit.

How does the saying go? If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

I agree a fake Rolex being bought is just wrong.

But if you bought a real Rolex and want to put a dressy Alligator band on for special occations, calling that a counterfeit is just silly.

If a Rolex watch is 50 years old and needs a new crystal because it had an old beat up plastic crystal and the owner wants to replace it with a new sapphire non- rolex crystal am I supposed to call that a counterfeit as well.

What if a dial is reconditioned and repainted and the paint isn't Rolex paint is that then counterfeit.

There is good common sense, a watch being fake all the way is a fake and should be called such and then there is sillyness when a true Rolex could have one part such as a new second hand for a badly worn one replaced and it suddenly not being authentic because its a replacement generic part.

What next, if a Rolex is serviced by a non-Rolex shop if the oil used is not the Rolex oil is it then a fake cause the oil isn't authentic.
