Models, models, models...
Forum-ers,
I'm just about to be presented a Rolex watch as a 20-year service award. As a wearer of an Oyster Perpetual for many years I'm pleased! I've been given a list of model numbers to choose from but apart from the basic model I can't decipher what the differences are between the numbers quoted. Can anyone help me with the specifics of each - colour, bezel, strap, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Submariner 14060/93150 Sea Dweller 16600/93160 GMT Master 16710/78790 BLRO 16710LN 16710 Thanks! |

A BIG welcome to TRF! And congratulations on having passed 20 years of loyal service to your company. To your questions: The first numbers are the model reference numbers. After the / you have the BRACELET ref. numbers. 14060: = Submariner (No date!), no COSC movement, at least not officially so. 93150 is the Oyster bracelet with Fliplock. The 14060 is the only Sport's Rolex left that has holes in the case (at the lugs) and non SEL bracelet (Solid End Links). Bracelet sides are matte finished as on the rest of the bracelet. 16600: = Sea-Dweller. Very THICK Rolex, no cyclops on the crystal but with date, COSC movement (Cal. 3135), Helium vent for saturation diving. 93160 is the special Oyster bracelet with Fliplock and extra long diver's extension link included. Bracelet sides are high-polished, but the other parts of the bracelet are matte finished. 16710 BLRO: = GMT II BLeuROuge (Blue/Red bezel). 78790 = Oyster bracelet with Fliplock, but no diver's link. 16710 LN: = GMT II, black bezel (LN = Lunette Noir) 16710: = GMT, could be either BLRO or LN bezel. If I were to choose one of them, I would go for the 16710 BLRO, AKA "Pepsi", since this model is not made anymore.

Bo,
Thanks for the promopt reply. The information is just what I needed. I'm inclined to opt for the "Pepsi" watch myself. Cheers, Peter |

a Rolex for a 20 year service reward, good deal congrats on lasting that long. I work for the wrong company a Rolex is no where near what our service rewards are. For my 10 year the best thing I could pick out was a globe. I have not seen the list for 20 years but I am SURE no Rolex is on it.

Hello Peter and welcome.
It would appear from your profile you already own a GMT II. However, the new SS GMT looks awesome. Between the 14060 and the 16600, I'd go for the 16600. SD has Date function. BTW, congrats on 20 years service. If it's not too personal, who do you work for? You can PM me if you'd like. John. |

Wow, grat work and a job well done! I agree with the poster who would go with the Pepsi GMT. I have the black faced GMT, but if I were receiving a gift like this, something fun and bright and very positive. And that Pepsi is a classic Rolex known throughout the world.

If you already own a GMT then you should probably get something different. Both the SD and the Sub 14060M are great choices. I'd go for the SD as its worth more and has the date function.

Congratulations, Peter! You're fortunate to work for a good company in a good country. In the US perks like this are reserved for the already overpaid executives. They probably don't get to keep them in prison, though!

I spent over 30 years, retired, and got a chunk of wood with my name on it for the wall... I guess I didn't make the best career choice |

Those are some great choices. I think I'd get the Pepsi GMT, but the Seadweller is a cool option also. Be thankful you're not getting a Clownmaster!

TRFers,
Thanks for all the congratulations and suggestions/comments. To answer the question from some of you I work for Schlumberger, the world's biggest oil service company. Although of French origins (1932), we are now headquartered in the US (Houston). I'm currently working in India but have been in Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, Libya, Iran, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Chad, UAE, Norway and the UK. Rolex is the watch of choice for many oil types, but then there's a reason for that; they are tough. Peter |

Congrats on the 20 years. That is quite an accomplishment
My choice would be the 16600 SD. I had one and I miss it. Very unique watch. Sits heavier and higher on the wrist. To help you, go to your local AD and try all the models on to see what you like. And keep us posted.....

Peter, your choice options
Peter:
The Sea Dweller is the bad boy of the Rolex professional line. It is heavier and thicker than any other model, the bracelet links are heavier and thicker, and it dives deeper at 4000 feet than any other sport Rolex. If you choose Sea Dweller, you'll have the bad-boy on your wrist and whilst in the field on your job, will have the appearance of the oil exec with the most rugged "jewel-tool" watch, a beast with highly polished bezel-edges that give this watch the pleasing combination of big and beefy, and polish. Unique and unusual. The GMT is conversely is lighter, more comfortable and easier to wear in my opinion. The watch also has the advantage of tracking 2 time zones, so if you're in Bangalore and your head office is in Dallas, you can track both without effort. The red and blue bezeled GMT (Pepsi) is what I have, since I wanted to choose the most iconic GMT, and the GMT was devised for the PanAm company in the 1950's, ergo the red and blue company colours in the bezel. And while I'm a proud Canadian, the Pepsi bezel has the most "American" looking bezel I've ever seen; it has a red and blue that is so vibrant, so alive, that I've been told by colleagues at work that I'm wearing the "American" Rolex to work today......... So, the decision is yours. Me, I'd go with the GMT in your position, since its useful in tracking the 2 time zones, which you doubtless have to do. The Pepsi is the most vibrant and "alive" colour scheme in the Rolex professional line. A few pix of my Sea Dweller and GMT. Best of luck in deciding, Chris |
