Question re AP Royal Oak

Does anyone know the main differences between these two AP models:
14790ST
15300ST

I like that white dial!

I am looking at adding a RO to my collection and saw the 14790ST at what seems a fair price. I looked at AP's official website and it seems it's discontinued. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Adrian

The 14790ST is 36mm in size and equipped with calibre 2225 while the 15300ST is 39mm and equipped with calibre 3120. Their real life difference is very minimal though despite the obvious size difference. Hope it helps.

The RO 14790 comes with the caliber 2225, not 2555. The 2225 is based off the JLC 889. If I am not mistaken, the 15300ST also comes with a see-though sapphire case back and the newer three blade deployant buckle, while the 14790 does not.

Oops sorry typing error. Yes it is with the 2225 for the 14790 and the newer 13500 comes with the see through caseback.

I thought so but I wasn't sure. Just wanted to make sure he had the right caliber number.

Thank you both, I sincerely appreciate it. I think the discontinued model sounds like a good enough option for me at this point.

Ask yourself why you are getting the AP then. Is it just to "have one" in the collection? To me, AP is about the timeless and historical design in combo with the in-house movement from one of the last family owned haute horology shops out there. I'd (and did actually) spent the extra money for a 15300 in a more wearable size and the beautiful 3120 in-house movement.

but I have to exercise some restraint. I was at the AP boutique in Geneva last week and they showed me the 15300, which I loved, and then they showed me the (I think) 15202 and I was immediately in love with that watch, not only because of its looks but also because of the history behind it. Luckily (for my wallet at least) I'm not into complications, because the guy there was ready to show me some really outstanding pieces like the one he was wearing.

Thank you for the advice, I need to do some thinking before I go back there next month.

Thomas,
That is one sick watch. I'd never be able to tell the time as I'd get distracted by the movement. My next AP has to be the RG RO Jumbo or a Jules Audemars EOT.

^^^^^GREAT looking watch Thomas!!!! What's the diff between the 15300 and the 15202, just the movement inside? They look identical, but the 15202 is like 50% more...

I was too late and my fellow friend Mike already answered that question.
I actually prefer the 15300 over the Jumbo even though it's more the original RO.
- Thicker case and thicker bracelet.
- Second hand
- Easier to find

Regarding the movement both are top notch

The 15300 has a second hand while 15202 does not. 15300 is thicker and has a more modern feeling bracelet. The 15202 movement (then the 2120 no date) was originally developed by JLC as the calibre 920 and commissioned by VC, AP, and PP. AP now has sole rights to the movement. The 2121 movement (upgrade from 2120 with date) is very thin due to the rotor resting on a rail. It's quite a beautiful movement. The 15300's 3120 is an in-house AP movement. A little thicker but excellent in its own right. The 2121 movement is used in very few AP models whereas the 3120 is the basis for a number of models like the ROO series (with a DUbois Depraz chrono module attached).

The 15202 is produced in far fewer numbers than the 15300. It's also truer to the original Genta design. However, as a starter I would recommend the 15300 due to its more modern styling. If you like it, then you can upgrade. Either way, I highly recommend trying it on first as it doesn't fit everyone well.

I find that the 14790 wears very similarly to a 40mm Rolex. I wouldn't say that the 15300 is a more "wearable size" because for me the lugs stick out over my wrist. Try both of them on and decide what works best for you, for me it was the 14790.
