Sub LV vs. SS GMT II

I've been literally drooling over the LV for the past few months now...and I'm sure I would be extremely happy with it. BUT...Since the new SS GMT II's have been introduced...I've been on the fence.
The Sub LV has a maxi dial and green bezel which I think are awesome!
The GMT II has a maxi dial too...but also has a new movement and improved movement, ceramic bezel and the super case which I love, not to mention the new clasp. I'm a big guy...8.5" wrist...so the case fits me better than most any other.
The Sub LV is probably on it's way to becoming an iconic Rolex just by it's more limited numbers.
My question to the members here is this...

Do you think that either the Sub LV or the new SS GMT II is on it's way to becoming the next SS Daytona??

My AD here in Honolulu just got something like 16...and said all were spoken for.
I've read here where some members have gotten discounts on the SS GMT where I'm sure no discount would be offered on the LV. This would make the GMT a better value. Right?

Any and all comments are appreciated...

Mahalo...and Aloha

I don't know but I can't wait to read the responses from others. I love my LV but have recently been torn between it and getting a GMT pepsi. I can only speak for the LV. Some don't like the Maxi dial because they think it makes the dial to busy. I like it and it doesn't bother me. I like the green bezel - makes the black dial stand out and is not as nearly as offensive in person as some make it out to be. I hope you get some good responses because I have been debating something similar myself. Good luck

When I got my GMT on the 13th, I had my AD get both watches in. I tried one on, tried the other, tried one on, tried the other. I went back and forth for about 20 minutes.

I loved the LV since I had first seen it. The glow was something "unusual" in a watch; the green was accented so nicely by the 904 stainless; it actually seemed to lure me in...

But, the harder I thought about it, the more I couldn't resist the call of the GMT. There are SO MANY improvements with such a small price difference, that it would have almost been foolish to have gone with the LV. Not to mention, I almost assume that RSC will produce green ceramic inserts in the near future. If that happens, viola -- problem solved. Also, while the LV did have lots of appeal as far as waterproofness goes, well, there's the new crown (and bigger guards) on the GMT; even though RSC doesn't rate it like it does a Sub, I am sure that it is equally as strong. Additionally, I don't need the diver's extension, BUT I DO NEED the expand-a-link.

Anyway, I know the boat you are in. Sink or swim, a choice will be made and you'll have to live with it. Try them both, then try them again. In the end, only you can make the call!!!

I've compared the two side by side. Each has its appeal. I found the LV to have a more subtle and suave look. The new GMT is beefier, looks more rugged and fills the wrist more. I'm 5'11" 180lbs and I felt the GMT covers my wrist with more authority than the LV.

Thanks guys...
I think most will agree that the Sub LV is a beautiful watch...as is the GMT II...both have advantages and disadvantages.
I'm curious about what you all think about the availability of the new GMT...does anyone think it's on it's way to becoming the SS Daytona of new?? No discounts and short in numbers...or is it still too early to tell?

I don't think either are on their way to becoming the next Daytona. Having said that, the LV is still harder to obtain than the new GMTII. Give it 6mths the GMT will be in every AD window like the old style was, whereas the LV still wont be.

Personally I don't like the shiny bracelet or the proportions between the larger lugs on the GMT and the original size bracelet. It now looks out of proportion.

As for the improvements, I have never had a problem with shock or magnetism affecting my Subs, so I don't need to be sucked into the hype of the improvements inside the GMT. The solid bracelet would be nice, but again, I don't have a major problem with my LV, and would only really want the bracelet if it was brushed, not polished.

I'd also consider that you'll be paying 10% more now for the GMT than the LV, when in 6-12mths, the GMT will be discounted, and the LV will still be fetching list.

They won't be produciong green ceramic inserts, at least according to my AD. The reason is that it is a watch unto itself with its own model and coinfiguration. That watch is done. If there is another commemorative SUB it would be something else, but at a different time and when would that be? There may be new ceramic subs, but no green LV ceramics I wager.

Both are excellent watches having their own certain appeal.
I think it's important to understand the 116710 is the replacement to the the great 16710 and as such will be the only current reference for the GMT for many years. While it may seem a bit hard to get now, as has been said in a few months the watch will be commonly available as was the 16710.

Even though the LV has been in production since 2003, it has shared it's production time with the 16610 and is still made in fewer numbers than it's black bezel counterpart.

Are either Daytona like in their availability--no, but then no current reference is.

The question may be does one represent a collectability factor over the other. In that case the LV IMO has the edge.

Changes to the GMT seem to represent the wave of the future Rolex is taking. If these changes spill over to the Submariner line (and it is a very old reference even by Rolex standards) then perhaps we will see a measure of collectability afforded the LV.

To what extent, no one knows.....

I suggest you try it side by side. These two watch styles are quite different enough that depending on your tastes you would definitely gravitate to one or the other.

As far as the collectibility factor IMO anybody's guess would be as good as yours. It is just speculation and using this as a decision criteria may not be totally smart, unless you are buying for investment reason and plan to sell later for profit.

Actually the GMT is really looking good to me. I can't see anything wrong with it! Even the price (if discount is available) would be better than the US$5525 that the LV sells for.

I'm not thinking so much about collectability...or buying as an investment...I'm just speculating on avaliblity and possiblities of discounts on it as a regular production model.

My AD here told me that all 16 SS GMT's were spoken for and there wasn't a possiblity of even seeing one until maybe next shipment...but who knows if this particular salesperson was telling the truth...or even knows the facts??
In any event...I think I've made up my mind and setting my sights on the GMT.

Thanks for your input guys!!!

It really does come down to which one you like more. Even though the new GMT has new features, I still like the look of the LV better because it stands out more.

I went to an AD this past weekend and they told me that they were getting a shipment of the GMTs in a week and that I could put my name on the list for one. When have you heard that about the LVs?

Sub LV first. Reason is that they will stop producing commemoratives version sooner or later. so it is one watch where even if you have cash, you may not be able to buy brand new.

the SS GMT II, you can still purchase it when you got cash.

The decision between the LV and the new GMT II seems to be the one that quite a few forum members (including me) are struggling with. I've got at least 2 or 3 years to work it out.....I am currently watch rich and cash poor !
The consensus on this and other threads seems to be.....buy the LV now whilst you can, and pick the GMT up in a year at a discount.

I have both GMT Anv and LV, well it's a tough choice because the new GMT looks really good but yet the LV is hard to come by and will be discountined in the near future...I would go for the LV now and get the GMT later because the GMT Anv. will be around for some time.

I own the LV and like it. though if I was offered either one today at list I would opt for the GMT II, more practical, plus I already own an SS Sub Date.

Never having been so fond of the LV, I would definately go for the new SS GMT II, if I were to choose between the two
