Will you splurge?

I have been saving for many months for a new watch.

A second one as a day beater so that i can "retire" my Rolex.

But given the recession that is forthcoming, will you splurge on a luxury watch if you are in the same dilemma as me?

I'd say splurge away - the present recession is here to stay for quite some time and you need to be able to tell the time in the mean time.

Don't get the 'retire' bit - Rolex watches are made for wearing not keeping in little boxes in the dark.

Not everybody is in the same situation. Only you can make that decision based on your needs and your wants.

Hard to say from your post. Are you implying that funds are in some possible jeopardy, or are not there now in case you have emergency needs? In that case you'd be nuts to spend on a luxury item.

A watch is the last thing to consider if your budgeting in the next years is at all shaky.

Also, I don't understand about wanting to retire a Rolex for a beater. What else is a Rolex good for other than using?

A few weeks ago I heard on the news that the sale of luxury watches is up 13% in this recession while sales of some other items are down.

In short, go ahead and splurge.

if the second Rolex will "retire" the first Rolex... then you will need a third Rolex to "retire" the second Rolex, and so on....

I could do a daytona to retire the dd to only sometimes instead of always but not to save the rolex. I could die tomorrow, why waste time not enjoying what you Can't Have Forever?

I heard Singapore has the more "reasonable" price as compared to other countries (especially your neighbor - Malaysia)

Given whatever dilemma is incoming, I totally intend to splurge on a watch this year. This year it happens to be Bremont I've decided to splurge on, but I suggest you splurge on what tickles your particular fancy. I've had the best year I could have expected after striking out on my own in January, and IMO I deserve a watch for my efforts.

If you are strapped for cash and don't have sufficient savings to see you through rough patches, then purchasing a luxury item is not the most responsible choice you could make. It all depends upon your individual circumstances, comfort level, desires, and self control.

I'm going to focus on the "circumstances" part of this post and ignore the rest -- and sorry to you for doing so.

I don't know about a lot of you, but I'm expecting/hoping to see a lot of income at year's end this year. I don't have it yet, but I can kinda discern the skeins of time to know when it will be here, and I am planning around that, to the best of my capabilities, as imperfect a science as that may be.
