Thoughts on TT DateJust circa 1988?

Has the Rolex DateJust pretty much stayed the same for some time? This one is circa 1988. Have there been many major changes since then? I'm thinking about trying to purchase this watch. It's listed at about 85% condition. If I send a 1988 DJ to the RSC for a servicing and it comes back looking new is it pretty much the same watch as a new DJ? I think this is just such a classic design. Also, what's the difference between the DJ and date? Thanks.

P.S. What do you think about the diamonds on the dial - with or without?

The Date is I think 1 mm thinner than the DJ. Here is my Dad's.

Here is my DJ.

Thanks Tom. Nice looking DJ. I guess that answers that question about if you like the diamonds on the dial.

Rolex lists the Date watch as a 34 mm.

The Date is a very nice watch and quite frankly that -2 mm is not that noticeable once it's on the wrist.

Yes, I agree with you on the DJ being a classic design and I would suggest you consider a raised roman dial. It is a "classic" dial and cheaper than diamonds.

Here's one of my DJ's and as you can see I like the raised romans.

I second the raised Roman dial. I have had a diamond dial on my DD before. I kept it for three months. Original serti dials look good, but I stick with Romans.

When I bought my new DJ, it was a toss up between the Diamond and Romans. I have no regrets on my choice.

As far as a Date, I agree, on the wrist, you can hardly tell the difference. My Dad wears a SS Date on an oyster and it is a sweet looking watch.

That is a beautiful DJ, John. I have the exact watch as Mort's but I could really go for the Oyster bracelet, it looks so clean! Speaking of the bracelets, I know the jubilee costs more, probably because of the labor but which one has more gold in it? The oyster appears to.

Hey Michael, here's mine....also a huge Roman fan, though I do admire the serti dials.

I'd advise you to try on a 'Date' model. At 34mm, while only 2mm smaller in case size than the DJ, it can feel a lot smaller on the wrist.

While I like new Date models, each time I try one on it just feels a tad too small, and I'm a gal! My wrist is just under 6.5" and I'm about 5'6" tall. I can't bring myself to go any smaller than a 36mm, but that's me

Good luck and let us know what you decide

Thank you for the kind words David.

No matter what the content (gold or ss) the Jubilee band is always more and I assume it's the labor. My best guess would be that the oyster might have more gold, especially in the new bracelets.

As I mentioned before I'm a big fan of the romans and I think the raised romans just makes it better. I'm not knocking the sports models, but IMHO, the DJ is the classic Rolex.

Here's my latest addition. It's not a very good pic but I thought I'd post it until I can take some better ones. As you can see, outside of the romans, it's about the opposite of my other DJ. Rose gold rather than yellow, jubilee instead of oyster and black dial rather than white.

It's quite a change when I switch from one to the other.
