How would your reply back to this email from an AD for Patek?

I sent an email that said I am quoting my exact email "Do you currently have the Patek Philippe Men's Aquanaut 5167A in stock? and what is the best price I can get on this piece shipped to Ohio? I am looking to purchase within a week if the price is right". Thanks

His reply "Sorry we are not allowed to discount Patek......Perhaps you might like the Rolex I think they are more of a discount watch"

I think that was a proper reply from a PP AD.

I just found his reply degrading a simple we do not discount Patek's would be fine. It's funny cause out of all the AD's I have spoken to for Audemars Piguet or Vacheron not a single one has had that tone or reply.

If a brand prohibits discounting, the last thing I would do as an AD is respond to an unsolicited email asking for discount prices. You might have a better chance at calling.

well. a patek has is price set and it wont come out cheep. if youre about to buy a patek you dont need the discount. i mean if you have set youre eyes on that piece, you know it will cost ya. if we are talking about a bran new one. a used one...can get for less....i think the ad was given you a correct answer. dont set youre eyes on something you cant afford. the ad prob think you where degrading by asking for discount on a patek. but hey. thats my opinion....

At a minimum they should have told you the MSRP as that would be their best price. As others have said, they wouldn't admit to a discount by email.

Why on earth would you email and ask about a discount? I'm surprised they even replied.

They can lose their AD status discussing discounts, especially in writing.

Perhaps they were thinking you were trolling them. I'd take the chance to say they may get a lot of those types of e-mails and wouldn't be surprised if I knew they were tired of it.

This being said, that answer isn't very good neither. Had I received an e-mail like that I would have probably just said I couldn't discuss any discounts (this, of course, if I haven't decided to ignore the said e-mail). You always get better discounts when you're in the store anyways!

I've gotten the "perhaps you'd like to look at something more in your price range" line when I've actually been in an AD and have spent time with them, and they're not offering a decent discount (this was a Breitling AD). That is when I walked right out.

Emailing an AD out of the blue about Patek discounts makes you sound like you're trolling around for discounts. The Patek brand carries with it an air of sophistication and I'm sure the salesmen act the part (for better or worse) when it comes to making a sale, and so I'm surprised you actually got a reply email. I'd say that was rather nice of them - and perhaps the next best thing they can give you a discount on is a Rolex in their store. I wouldn't be offended in this particular case.

Interesting. Can't really blame the AD for that reply though.

I'd probably reply and asking if he sell Rolex watches.... (you know where I am going with this.... )

To answer your question: I wouldn't reply. They chose to reply to your original request which is surprising. The reply maybe contains a condescending attitude ...hard to read. Let them be. Fact is if they'd just asked you to call them they could have discussed their policy over the phone and invited you to come in and see their range...thus lifting their chances of making a sale. Their loss in the end.

Take it clinically.

They've told you they don't want your business.

Don't give it to them.

If you want a discount on a high end watch, then you should be a regular customer of that AD. Just my 2 cents.

I saw enough fakes at the jewelry show and online (not from this forum's vendors) and was terrified that I would get a fake. I wasn't a member here when I started looking.

So I went to my regular jeweler, who is an AD and after I picked a watch, I asked about a discount. I also asked about adding an after market diamond bezel later. Both things that an AD is not supposed to do. They did both. But they know me. I think that is key.

The seller and the buyer need to establish trust. If the trust isn't there, then getting what you want for the price you want is difficult.

I bet the salesman isn't a native english speaker: he doesn't understand he just insulted you. Verbal nuances are the most difficult part of the language.

If anyone who ever worked for me responded to a customer in this fashion there would be severe consequences. He was correct in saying that Patek doesn't allow discounts, but to follow it up with such a snide remark is incredibly rude. It wouldn't fly in most retail environments and definitely should be allowed from a Patek sales rep, imho.

This. It is easy to misunderstand people over email...and yes context and nuances are the hardest things to learn in the English language

Exactly.
I bet when you go to the store and talk to them, or have a friend in the watch sales, you'd get a very nice discount.
I am not a buyer for a PP, but when I had a question about one model, the AD mailed me 3 or 4 different catalogs and brochures and a Patek magazine. I think PP (and for that matter AP and VC) authorized dealers have excellent customer service.

You didn't ask for a discount -- you asked for a price. It's not like PP lists MSRP's, and you usually have to ask an AD to get a stated price.

Email him back and tell him he fails too badly at reading comprehension for you to believe he is entrusted to sell such fine timepieces.
