Datejust two tone from '85 just bought
(apologies if duplicated but my first post seems to have not uploaded).
So I've just bought a 1985 Rolex Datejust - 36mm white dial, in gold and s/steel, roman numerals - for my wife. Model number is 16013, serial number stats with an 8 if I remember correctly. It is the first Rolex I have bought. Can anyone tell me a little about Datejusts from this period, calibres used and power reserve, anything to watch out for when I give it the once over after she takes off the gift wrap? There was no booklet so I will try and source one if the is anything useful to be found in it. Besides it will be nice to get the "package" complete. Apart from the hang tag and certificate and boxes of course, what else made up the original package? For 2 days until I hand it over I am a Rolex owner! The bracelet is new, three central gold links and outside in steel. What is this style, Jubilee, Oyster? Also at this age it will be acrylic rather than sapphire, but will it be quickset date? |

I can't help with the caliber of the movement but if I'm right the power reserve should be around 40 hours. As for the bracelet it is a Jubilee indeed but be careful for there are a lot of Rolex watches with aftermarket bracelets (the original ones stretch after a couple of years and people don't always have the money to buy an original one so they get those). As well, I'm pretty sure it should be a quick set date model (I'd hate to be wrong but I believe they had those before 1985).
Hope it helped a bit (correct me if I said a bunch of nonsense facts :chuckle)! I'm sure your wife will love it! EDIT: By the way, welcome to TRF!

Thanks.
I'm assured the replacement is Rolex but I appreciate the warning. |

Fantastic. Just what I was after. Very pleased that the watch was priced similar to high end "fashion" quartzes but should hold its value infinitely better as well as being most interesting.

Congratulations!
My favorite, although I am somewhat partial to the oyster band. The movement is the 3035 and you also have an acrylic crystal. Be sure to keep the crown screwed down finger tight to maintain water resistance. Too many new Rolex owners get lazy and leave the crown unscrewed, which can allow water to enter the case if the watch is submerged. Pictures..?

Thanks for the tip - a colleague had that issue on his Planet Ocean after some scuba. As soon as it is out of the gift wrap I'll do some photos.

Fine watch-I have one with champagne stick markers. That bracelet looks great-noce and tight.

Yes, it was that specific dial I wanted, gold roman on white - it took a while to find. I may have just settled for a arabic gold on white, but for some reason batons were a no-no.
There is a rather bewildering choice, though! |

Oh and I was reading why IIII not IV on clock faces on Wikipedia. I like the visual symmetry reasoning.
