Are rolexes cheaper than Tag Heuer?

Seems like a dumb question. However, in business you depreciate the value of the asset and that is the true expense of the asset. So I was thinking many rolexes are cheaper to own than Tags or even other brands.
Please give your opinion or story about this topic.

The book value of an asset is cost less depreciation. The true expense is the cost of the asset plus what it takes to put it in service.

To answer your question, a Tag is cheaper to own but I would say that a Rolex is MUCH better value for the money.

It would depend on the model, of course, but I would think that over the lifetime of the watch, the Rolex would end up being better value for money. I get the impression that Rolexes are seen as a lifetime purchase, whilst TAGs are more disposable. Depreciation on TAGs is pretty horrific, but the servicing costs would be slightly lower too. Yet, with the strength of the Rolex second-hand market (assuming that it will continue), it is likely that you will get at least what you paid, if not more in the long term. You couldn't say that about a TAG.

A Rolex is a pretty secure safeguard of money, one of the best of any watch brands

No offense to other Tag owners, but I have a Ladies Tag link watch and it is a POS. It is very pretty, nice looking when polished and it only cost me $1500, but not worth what I spent. Plus I have to put batteries in it.

My two Seikos have been much better values, better battery life and more durable.

With that said, the Rolex is the best value for the money. I beat my watches to hell and back. I wear them 24/7 and I have had the Rolex 4 1/2 years and managed a few scratches and a shattered crystal, but the Rolex still looks great and I have it polished every few years. The Tag lasted about a year and has a huge dent in the bezel that can't be polished out.

I would always recommend the Rolex!

It depends on what you value.

If all you want is a watch that has some cachet, in most circles a TAG will do the trick. So, for a lot of people a TAG in the range of $1000-$1500 delivers a lot of bang for the buck.

Everyone knows the name and everyone knows they're relatively expensive and most have a substantial wrist presence.

I don't need to address Rolex, as everyone here knows the story and knows where they come down on the issue.

It's all relative and for the most part subjective.

As already stated...in the long run I believe a Rolex is and has better value. And remember it's hard to put a value on enjoyment!!!

Rule # 1 of any investment is to buy low. do not pay MSRP for anything so when the time comes to sell, you won't lose too much. I have had pretty good luck with my Tag and can still recoup 50 to 60% of my purchase price after using it for over 15 years.

Have you checked the MSRP of Tags recently? Some of their automatic Carerra models are in the $8,000 to $9,000 range.

These are heavily discounted brand new (35% to 40% on Amazon). After buying a new one discounted, try getting that amount back on resale. You will probably get 50 to 60 % of the discounted amount back, giving you a net loss of around 70% from the msrp.

Since you probably won't pay MSRP for a Tag, the initial cost will be lower. So, Tags are cheaper to own (and maintain). But, and here is the important but, which would you rather own? The Rolex will theoretically give you more pleasure over a greater period of time. If you put a dollar value on pleasure, then perhaps a Rolex will be less expensive over many years.

Watch Professor, thanks for reiterating my statement. However, I did not say my Tag was better or gave me more pleasure over my Rolex. The same rule of buying applied to a Rolex. If a person paid MSR plus tax vs. buying it on TRF at a 15%-25% discount and no tax, obviously he or she will not lose as much when the time comes to sell. Just my 2 cents.

I bought my wife a Tag Alter Ego a number of years ago. She loves it and has no interest in selling so depreciation is a mute subject. I generally buy and hold.

The economics of retail or used watches favours Rolex, hands down.

Better to lay out that extra thousand up front for quality and value instead of buying cheap without value.

Few consumer products can hold their value the way a Rolex does.

May be fine "in business," but it's a flawed formula for many categories of hard assets--for example, musical instruments, wine, and artwork. I think it may be a flawed model for some watches, too, although which ones are a matter of debate.

Buying a watch is also buying the brand. Rolex has more value on its brand compare to TAG.

I bought a yr 2000 datejust used in 02 for 2700 and sold it in 2010 for 3k, so i made 10% on my investment and enjoyed it for 8yrs. Do that with a tag.

But if you read my statement, I did say that Tags are cheaper to own and maintain. So I agreed with you.

However, owning a Sub Date for 15 years will get you back 80% to 100% (or more) of your initial cost, so while the initial outlay is greater, the Rolex (depending on the model) will be a better investment.

I've seen used TAGs for as low as $300...this is for a quartz, pre-owned watch from the 90's...I've never seen a quartz Rolex for that price regardless of movement, age or condition.

I buy my watches knowing I'll keep them .
Since an asset is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for
it once sold, and the above fact about me, the dollar value to me is the same
(zero) for all my watches

I had a TAG Monaco on bracelet before my Sub. I wished I'd kept it, it was stunning. But, I just know it would not have had any wrist-time given the true magnificence of the Sub.
