Im being taunted by a 1680...

My watch guy got this in.. its a original 1680 RED 2.5mill. lugs look thick and appears to be decent. Ive known him for years and trust him 100%. He told me to make a offer. Im just not sure what I should.. I like a deal because I never know if im going to keep. There is no band, but I figured thats not a deal breaker... any ideas? Pros and Cons?

This may have been better posted in the vintage portion of the forum.

I take it this one doesn't come with Box and Papers? This is by no means a deal killer.

Doesn't appear as the hands match the dial. Not all will but that can be distracting and not something most will want to try to fix later because that can be a hassle.

I personally prefer the ones that aren't missing the pearl. This to can be fixed.

What's the service history on this watch, if uncertain make sure you add this as a potential additional cost.

Bracelets can be found at an additional cost or you can wear it on a Nato as I do mine.

Any ideas as to what this is going to cost you?

Yea I know it was posted wrong. Tried to delete can I move the post? I thought the hands were different. Not sure the service history. I know he did last week. Might be a project which I'm not looking for right now.

You can PM a mod and asked for it to be moved, or you can repost the same in the vintage section.

I'm no expert on vintage so please wait for others who are more experienced to comment.

I'm also wondering if this one has been re-lumed at some point.

Interesting find, however, personally speaking I would pass. Not having the original bracelet would be a deal breaker for me. I am sure one can be sourced but are you willing to go through the trouble?

I'd not worry about the bracelet, rather have a new 93150 than an old 9315 for actual wear anyway.

Figure-out what he wants for it. Overall, it is not a bad looking watch if you could get it for the right price

Doesn't look too bad to me.

It's a Mark IV red with open 6's and the brighter red on white submariner print with rounded S's. it also has the = to the right of the A in Submariner which fits with the Mark IV.

It has the original fat font bezel and original crown. The tritium pearl can be sourced for about $200 on somewhere like VRF.

But I would question the hands since they look to be a fair bit lighter than the hour markers and maybe replacements although, to be fair, the patina on some hands did change at different rates to the hour markers. But for me would be an issue.

It should have a 9315 bracelet with 380 end links but most people change to the later 93150 anyway which can be sourced easily.

Thanks everyone. Dang diamond now you got me interested in it again. I'm going next Saturday to look at it. My wife will kill me, but if I get a deal it might be worth it... I'll make a offer and see. I guess that never hurts!!

Nice price. For the right price, it may be the right one :)

I think on that dial (mk iv) its printed red on top of white, hence the way it looks as you described

You are correct Gabriel. The Mark II and Mark IV dials had red printed over white lettering which gives these two marks the most vibrant coloured red lettering and, as such, are my two favourites .

I'd pass,...dial is everything & the hands / indices patina not matching would kill it for me, not even the original crown would save it.

There are other Mk IV's out there for a bit more but without any of these issues.

Sounds like you've been bitten by the 'red' bug', ...it'll only get worse & wont go away

You'll get one soon I'm sure

I love Steve's 'red', we need a pic !!

Ps

I understand Mk I & II are red over white also

Thx Chris and yes I agree on the hands.....it would be a deal breaker for me too ..... but would depend on price and likely cost of a replacement set from somewhere like VRF.

And as requested, here's mine

Buy it for 6,5k, it's a fair price and then hunt for some other hands and bracelet. The dial looks fine and so does the case

Diamond that's awesome. I'm just looking for a long term investment. If it's a deal, Ill get it and work on the other parts. Just not up on the "Reds" I'll look at it Saturday and decide. I think I won't loose. Ill probably put it up and wear on rare occasions. We will see what happens....

Think you should be fine at that 6.5k price provided all is authentic, look for a matching set of hands(anyone knows how much they cost or how difficult they are to get?) and you can recoup the cost by selling the hands currently on the watch!

Hmm, I know that watch. Like you said they are trustworthy and do excellent work servicing. They restored a 50s oyster perpetual with a cal 1030 for me, they did a great job.

I spoke to them about the watch, I passed on the price they are firm at.
