My third one . . .
After a 27 years hiatus from when I first purchased a Rolex, I performed a Rolex Double Whammy this week.
As told in my introductory post, last Sunday I picked up a shiny brand new Air-King with blue dial and arabic numerals. Now, today I win an eBay bid for a 1987 Air-King. This is the description posted by the seller: This watch was purchased new by me in 1987 from Hamilton Jewelers in Princeton, New Jersey. It has been serviced by authorized Rolex dealers, new main spring and crystal installed at last service. This Air-King was a special order watch with the Jubilee bracelet. Not common on this Rolex model. Additional band links and all original paperwork included. These are the pictures posted by the seller, I will post my own (which doesn't necessarily means better), after I get the watch: This will only reiterate that you should never say never! When I bought my first Rolex, I was only 15 and totally infatuated with the brand and its products. Then 10 years latter, after I almost got killed for the watch and lost it to crime I swore never to buy a Rolex again. 17 years after that promise I bought not one but two Rollies. One of them my first used watch ever. By the way I intend to become a strong advocate for the respect the little Air-King, my favorite Rolex, deserves. |

I was admiring an Air King today at my AD.
Luckily for me, I'm drawn to the simpler, and therefore cheaper Rolexes, like the Sea-Dweller, Sub No Date, Explorer and Air King. Very clean and classy looking. Who needs all that bling? Ok, I have to admit the TT Black or Blue Subs are pretty cool. And the TT GMT Master II is a great looking watch. I guess a little bling never hurt anybody, right?

Well done Simon.
Nice score on ebay. Now to ensure this was a special order AK with jubilee bracelet check the numbers that are typed on the certificate. The beauty with the US typed Chronometer Certificates is that the bracelet reference is noted. Now, locate the long typing on the top right of the certificate above the serial number. It should read something like: R1400010B6251 Where: R - Rolex watch 14000 - Air-King 10 - Silver dial B - Bracelet 6251 - Jubilee bracelet Now if it was issued with an oyster bracelet the last 4 digits will be 7835. I hope this helps. John. |

Love the AK's too, congrats. The one from '87 is my favorite. Simple, elegant, yet still a tough Rolex. Wear them in good health.

OK. I got it today.
Ran to my AD . . . and guess what? Not only they say is authentic but also they said that I got a steal and that the watch was in excellent condition for its age. They re-polished the acrilic and the bracelet free of charge and I went my way happy has can by. EXCEPT that, my beautiful LUMIX LX2 broke so I will have to take pics with a less nice camera sometime tonight or tomorrow. Anyway, my Air-King collection is as off today . . . a collection. One R and One Z serial 20 years apart from each other. |
