"Red" Datejust
Hello guys, I'm new to this forum, and tried my luck with the search function but to no avail.
I have come across a DJ ref 1601 with a black stick dial where the letters "Datejust" are in red colour. I have never seen this on DJ before and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to the authenticity of this dial or if it's a redial/non original? Sorry, I have no photos of this watch. many thanks in advance for any advice you may offer. |

I've seen some vintage Datejusts with red lettering, including the photo of this one, borrowed from another member. However, this is not a 1601, and without a photo of the watch you're talking about, it'll be difficult for people here to help much. Good luck, though.

Thanks for your feedback, yeah I can see that it would help to get some photos of the watch. Will try to get some and upload on here.

Is it a Turnograph?

No, not a Turnograph. It's a 1601 SS jubilee with WG fluted bezel, black stick dial gold markers, black figures in the date window, but the letters "Datejust" are in red, just like the above picture posted by swish&&

The watch is for sale on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/170766142548...84.m1423.l2649
I'm thinking it is a re-dial too, as have never seen any DJ 1601 with such dials, hence the question about authenticity. Thanks for your advice guys. |

That this is HIGHLY over priced and the sellers rating is not by any means stellar. Keep and eye out in the classifieds section or on the vintage rolex forum. They come up fairly often for just over half as much. Good luck in your search!

mmm... I have been looking at a lot of pictures of DJ and this is unusual. Text in advert = "very sort (sic) after red Datejust"...

I remember the early Datejusts like this 6305 had Datejust in red, but I have never seen a 1601...

Yeah I think it's time to ask the seller some in-depth questions...

The bracelet on the one on ebay looks fake to me.
In fact, I'm positive it is. I think the dial is fake, too. The coronet is highly suspicious at the very least.

Thanks Grady, now that you mention it, that coronet does look somewhat dodgy. I have sent the seller a message asking for more details, let's see what he comes back with, if anything...
I recently bought The Rolex Report by Brozek, and after reading the chapters on replica watches I am now starting to realise how easy it is to get fooled if you don't do a careful examination before buying. We learn something new every day.. |

Doesn't every factory model red DJ (not TOG) have a roulette date-wheel & in this case the even number 2 should be in red?
Please let us know how it goes |

Chris, that seems to be the case, at least from what I have gathered after searching various websites.
Update: I asked the seller about the details and authenticity of this dial, and he confirms that the dial has been re finished, he claims by an ex Rolex service man. I have too little knowledge about vintage Rolexes to say anything about the real value of restored items like this, and I don't even know if it's possible to service this watch at a RSC with this dial, so I'm out... At least we found out. |
