Help me understand appeal of sport models
I've been lurking around on this site for some time, saving up money for my first rolex, trying them on at ADs, and slowly warming my wife to the idea. From what I've read and seen on this forum, it seems that the majority of members prefer sport models. Ostensibly, I'm the perfect candidate for sport model. I'm relatively young (27) and have a large frame to carry a watch with a larger face (6'6", 230lbs).
I'm drawn to the DateJust (116233) and almost have no interest in the sport models. I also like the DJII, but like the classic look of the 36mm better. Am I missing something? |

I don't think your missing anything, it seems like you prefer the DJ or DJII better. Always best to get the one you like, not the one someone else likes better.

There is nothing you are missing. It is all about taste. Do you prefer the sporty look or the classic look? I myself an more of a sports watch guy, but am starting to slowly grow on the other models rolex has to offer such as the DD, DJ, etc.. But again, its all about taste, when I saw the Sub, I fell in love with it and bought it!

Everybody has their own preference and that is why Rolex makes so many unique models. If you like the 36mm DJ, then it sounds like a great choice!
PS...I have found that the best solution is to have BOTH:)

I used to be the same way, only focused on the various 36mm Datejust models, dials, etc. I came to this site in 2009 and my whole perspective changed because of a guy named JJ. There is nothing wrong with a little datejust love, however, reading your frame you may want to start trying on more of the sports models (216570 ). Best thing to do is take your Mrs. with you to get her opinion, that way she can feel part of your decision making process. Good luck!

You aren't missing anything so get what appeals to you the most! Both DJ models are rated to 100M WR just as are all the non-Sub and SD sports models. So technically you could dive and do anything with your DJ as you would with a sports model.
I own mostly Sports models and absolutely LOVE my Rhodium Roman 36mm DJ on Super Jubilee. As your first Rolex I would go for the DJII, especially given your large stature and that it's a larger purchase to justify with wifey. If the 36mm DJ still appeals to you then you can get one from a truster seller here for a great price in the future. Sorry but you've been bitten by the Rolex bug, sir... you will have both in time. |

Nothing wrong with Datejusts. However, I am 6'2" 240lbs with 8" wrists and I don't think the regular Datejusts look right on me. You're 4" taller than me so I am guessing you will probably want the Datejust II. Just my recommendation. In fact, I just bought a 45.5MM Planet Ocean and I am beginning to believe for guys our size, bigger is better. I was looking at my 40MM Sub C this morning and it seems tiny now.

Nope. The Datejust is probably the biggest selling Rolex model worldwide.

Get what you like. Keep in mind that any oyster case Rolex is, in performance, very tough and can handle almost anything the sportier ones can. Unless you're a diver, they're all great, robust designs.

I love the sport models too but went with a TT DJ solely because I wear suits during the business day where it looks appropriate, yet also works on a casual Sat. night out. As you are a larger guy try on the DJII but remember that for now DJII cannot be had with a Super Jubilee if that matters. I'm 6'1" and find the 36 mm looks positively perfect.

It's kinda the same as cars. If you like sports cars you will like sports series watches because they are aesthetically appealing.

I say count yourself lucky if you don't like the sport models. That's a bunch of the Rolex line-up you can throughout the window. LOL. My problem is I like them all and will eventally need at least one of each type in my collection. :(

I like both, the 36 mm DJ/DD are classics of course. But Rolex to me is more about sport watches, although the DJ is just as tough.

To each their own. I've even found my tastes can change dramatically about a watch in a few years. However, I usually gravitate towards the GMT line.

I can tell you that at 6'6" and 230 lbs a 36mm DJ is going to look pretty small. I would opt for the 41mm DJ II like the 2 I have --->

If I were to make a post like this...
... it would read "Help me understand the appeal of non-sports models". Point being - different strokes for different folks!

Don't mind him, he's actually 4'3"...
I think it's a matter of style (as mentioned above), you just seem to prefer smaller and dressier watches! Who knows if after you get that DJ you will not want a Submariner or a GMT!

You have to get what you want. For me I wanted a watch I could go anywhere and do anything in. Im always on the move going somewhere and doing something so I needed a watch that could handle my lifestyle, the submariner was a great choice for me.

The DJ is a classic. I think is looks great with a suite and also with jeans and a t-shirt. Get what you like not what others like and you will enjoy the watch.
I am 6ft tall and 240lbs and I have a TT-DJ which I think wears just as well as my sport models. I am wearing the DJ out to dinner tonight with jeans and t-shirt and it looks just right!!!!! |
