Hi guys.

New member just seeking a bit of advice

I received gorgeous pre crown guard Rolex GMT 6542 from my father. I wanted to see if anyone knew how to remove the bezel?

I think it's 6542 as 6541 is a Milgauss.

What I do is I use a penknife, slot the sharp blade between the bottom of the bezel where it meets the case and apply some pressure without prying it upwards. The bezel should just pop up a little and you should be able to remove it.

Its simple to do but you may scratch the case quite badly.. The watch is worth a lot of money so spend the money to get it changed when its due for the service!

First off if it is an original bakelite bezel I wouldn't touch it! You need to have someone who knows what they are doing do it as that insert is as fragile as it gets--also bezel can be worth $20k alone depending on condition of it. Would love to see some pics....Also-as for service--do not send it to an RSC whatever you do. Check out a good vintage watch tech like Bob Ridley at Watchmakers International in Texas.

I will try and get some pics! This one has the metal insert on the original bezel. The original insert broke some time ago but i have managed to source another one, not an original one mind... but it looks better then the Metal one!

does the glass come off with it when you take the bezel off?

Yea I wouldn't mess w/ a 6542 bakelite bezel if I were you - take it to a pro. If it is a more modern replacement, go for it!

Even if it is a non Bakelite insert, the bezel ring of a 6542 is very valuable. More than $2k? I think it is safer to get the insert replaced by a trusted watchmaker IMHO. Post a pic so that we can all envy you ;-)

The plexi Crystal wouldn't come off when you remove the bezel as it is clamped tight by the retaining ring.
