consensus opinion request
this relates to that thread on the Tudor "Explorer" model Rolex supplied the British North Greenland Expedition, the Tudor 7809
that thread caught my attention as i have two 7809s - bought were purch'd purely for the FEF390 movements, to have for spares for the 7928s i've got. and unfortunately, i'd had a watchmaker dis-assemble one of them and had him send all the parts back to me. Okay - the question - i'm sending it back out to him to re-assemble with it's original movement, and the dial is "patina'd" with aging that looks like yellowed tobacco stain. The watchmaker, Shane Eade, up in Toronto, sez he can clean it using some mild silver sumthing acid, that he then washes off with water, and it should only remove the top layer of whatever's on the dial. There's a 1% chance it might take more off, it's not certain, but the patina on this dial I don't find particularly attractive I've found a decent condition original 7206 bracelet for it, so it would be a neat piece in the collection but what's the concensus - clean the dial or not? here are two shots |
