Sub-C with Cyclops-Free Crystal

Can this be done by an AD or would you have to take it to an independent jeweler/horologist? I'm curious what crystal was used to replace the original. Personally I like it.

Obviously this guy did it. What do you guys think?

Love the idea. Much prefer it without. I'll be following this thread to see if I learn anything new. So far, it appears the process is pretty difficult.

There are numerous threads discussing a couple of different ways in which this can be done. Some members have actually done so by accident when the dropped their watch. Their are quite a few have done so on purpose as well.

Here is just one of thjose threads.

Don't the new ceramics have AR under the cyclops? It would look funny without cyclops and an area of non-glare. I'd get a replacement crystal without cyclops and put that on, saving your original for future re-install.

Exactly. Get a new crystal w/out the cyclops and have it installed.

^^100% Correct, a replacement is the only proper way to do it.

As has been stated, the removal can be done but I would go the route of a different crystal and save the original!!!

I have thought seriously about doing this to my Exp II as the reflective glare makes it hard to see from any but the perfect angle.

I have done this with a couple of other watches and have liked the result.

I do not feel the desire to do it the my SubC. The AR coating under the cyclops solves the glare problem.

It's a NO from the RSC.

As much as the cyclop is a Rolex icon, your SubC really looks neater without it. I called the local RSC here in Toronto and asked two questions:
1. Can my SubC crystal be replaced with one minus the cyclop: NO
2. Is there a replacement crystal for the SubC without the cyclop: NO

If one is desperate to get rid of it, you would have to go somewhere other than an RSC to have it done.

I didn't like the cyclop when I was young with perfect eye sight.

Now I need my cyclop.

Not my cup of tea... Go buy a SD if you don't want a cyclops, why ruin a perfectly fine watch.

It's not "ruining" a watch. It can always be replaced.

It's like saying changing the bracelet for a leather strap is ruining a watch.

Getting a new crystal is probably the best way to go. Not something I would do though. It's what makes the sub date...distinguishes it....and I've always liked the cyclops. Ever since I started to notice Rolex watches it was the cyclops as a feature that made me aware of them.

If you read through the thread you will see that they are using aftermarket crystals... Aftermarket crystals of the size used by Rolex are readily available and any watchmaker can change them for you..

However, you still will abide by Rolex rule for aftermarket parts on your watch..

For years I hated the cyclops with a passion. However, it slowly started to grow on me, and now I cannot imagine my Sub-C without it. The asymmetry makes the watch, in my opinion. Oh well, to each his own.

When I was younger I use to think the cyclops was a terrible afterthought and demonstrated extremely shortsighted (no pun intended) design quality on the part of Rolex. I thought, "Seriously...you design a too small date window and your 'solution' is to stick a magnifying glass on the surface of the lens. " (and truth be told, I think I still kind of believe that).

But as I've grown older and considered the decades this feature has been on the Sub-Date, not to mention the plethora of copycat brands that have also introduced their own cyclops, the iconic status of what the cyclops represents was finally fully appreciated by me.

And to that point, I just can't embrace a Sub-Date sans cyclops. As others have said, if you absolutely despise the look of a cyclops, I would recommend going the SD4000 route instead of messing with the most overt identity of an icon.
