I just bought my husband his first Rolex
I haven't given it to him yet. It is for his 50th birthday. At first I planned to buy a used one, but they are between $3000 and $4000 - and some were more than 15 years old at this price. Then I learned I could get a new one for less than $5000 with discount -- but he has a stainless watch already, and you can't get a two-tone for that amount.
Then our daughters and I went to our local jewelry store (AD) and saw the revamped TT GMT Master II. Wow. We fell in love with it and after talking to the man in the store (a Rolex buff, wearing a Submariner) decided to put it in hold. I had to think about it - it's a huge purchase. $8925 retail, with 10% off it was still twice the amount of money I initially planned to spend. I asked friends in Chicago to see if they could find the watch with a greater discount than the one I received - they couldn't. I called the next day to say I'd take the watch, and he said if I'd changed my mind he had received a call from a man in a neighboring state who wanted to buy it. He said that his little store would only be alotted one of the TT GMT Master II Z serial number watches. I was lucky to have gotten any discount at all. I have to say that I'm normally not in love with the looks of Rolex watches, in large part because there are so many fakes around, and they are more masculine than my taste (which of course is not a negative for a man,) and they feel a bit like advertising the fact you can afford it (or that you're a spendthrift if you cannot.) But, my husband loves the looks of Rolex. I can tell. He purchased a fake Rolex at one point, but fakes just don't feel right on your wrist... and he didn't wear it much. With multiple kids in college, it makes little sense to spend so much money on a watch. But, you only turn 50 once, right??? I am going to give it to him this weekend. He can always return it if he's not as enthusiastic as I expect. It has made me feel better about my decision to make this big purchase reading all of your stories on this forum about how much you love your watches. It seems a bit crazy to me to spend so much on a watch, but your arguments about what is spent on a wedding ring did not go unnoticed by me. |

The lucky so and so!!! Good work - he'll appreciate that like you wouldn't believe! What you should do though is buy him some fancy socks and hold off on giving him the watch until he thinks that's it as far as presents go!!!

Welcome to TRF!
The new GMT II is one of the BEST made Rolex watches todate, and the TT version is one helluva goodlooking timepiece to boot. So I cannot but congratulate you for this excellent choice!

I'll tell you something even better. I work and have my own income, so it really is a gift - not just permission to allocate funds in a manner I would otherwise not have done!
I'm actually giving the watch to him early. The two year warranty started as of the day I bought the watch, I don't want to give it to him during a public birthday celebration because I don't like to advertise, and he might as well enjoy it - rather than it sitting in my office for another month and a week. He's going to get it on Saturday night. I told the restaurant it's a pre-birthday celebration (he has no idea of course... not a month early.) As for this being the first of many... I am SO not ready for that. |

Drop that bum and marry me...............I'll take a Rolex..............
That's just a great gesture. You took the time to learn about something that matters to him. Very nice. I'm just a few years from the big 50 and it's a milestone. And a GMT no less! Great choice. He'll be a full fledged member of the 4 hand club. PLEASE tell us how you plan to present it and his reaction. Well done. dP

I'm not sure how I am going to give it to him. I know that the watch will not be keeping time since it was set on Monday, and will have worn down by then. No way would I try to set it myself (I might mess it up.)
I will try and take photos tomorrow. My husband is home right now, so won't risk it. Can I just copy from my hard drive and paste into this reply area? |

Go to Advanced and you can Insert it from there, to be specific, after under Advanced choose the paper clip then browse to where the picture is and upload it.

I'm glad that our comparisons to a woman's engagement helped you appreciate the value in giving a Rolex as a gift. |

Great wife, great gift.
If the watch has the correct time now just turn the crown counterclockwise until it pulls out to the first position. Turn the crown 40 times clockwise and the watch will be wound again. Do this every other day until you give your husband the watch. Other suggestion, go to the AD the day before/day of the gifting and have them set and wind the watch for you. |
