Is Sky-Dweller the new Rolex flagship model?

I'm not sure what Rolex itended to create the Sky-Dweller for, but since it is bigger than the DDII, it's more complicated than the DDII, it's more expensive than the DDII, and -- so far -- it is only available in precious metals, do you think it would quickly or eventually become the new flagship model by Rolex?

Note: this is not a debate or poll on looks. It is purely a poll to find out whether you think the Sky-Dweller has a chance to become the most aspired Rolex model with the highest level of prestige.

I think the Sky Dweller will be slightly more expensive than the Daytona price range eventually. A Turntograph, GMT and Day-Date remix.

I don`t think Rolex will be selling the SkyDweller in great numbers regardless of it`s position in the overall lineup so the answer to the question remains to be answered by the marketplace. How can you guess where a new creation is going score on the desireability index?Perhaps if the production numbers are low enough it can become more sought after than the SS Daytona, who knows? Then again at an estimated price of $35,000-$40,000 it`s hard to imagine that it will anything but exclusive.

I still think the Yacht-Master 2 is the flagship model!

The Sky Dweller is just a DJII with a GMT dial. I'm a bit disappointed

The most expensive offering is not necessarily the flagship. A Day-Date 36 mm is still the King of the Hill, not to be toppled by a SkyDweller niche watch. DD is understated, elegant, and speaks to the Rolex line. The new SD is more flash and watch cool.

To answer the question of what watch is Rolex's flagship, one shouldn't just answer what their favorite model is (which they probably own); instead, what watch is Rolex using as the advertising, face of their company, flagship.

Absolutely. It would appear objectively that Rolex has positioned this new model as their flagship.

Really? Don't know how you can call this when there has been zero advertising for it

Given that the sub is at this moment top of the poll that's exactly what people are doing

  • High price point
  • Potentially limited production
  • Precious metals only
  • Most complicated movement - annual calendar, GMT, etc
  • Largest case size (this side of the DSSD) - even over the DDII
  • The promotional materials on Rolex.com suggest this one is gear towards the jetset (keeping track of "home time" when traveling, etc)

I still think the President is the Rolex flagship, be it DD or DDII. If they wanted the SKD to assume the face of the brand, they wouldn't have given it the ubiquitous Oyster bracelet.

Which is the most expensive, de-blinged?

Is it not the YM II?

Do we have a working definition of a "flagship model?"

I voted for the DD.

Only time will tell if it can be displaced by another.

That may be the case, but the added bezel (time/date/etc) adjuster more than adds to the complexity of the Sky Dweller. The Oyster on this watch may very well include an adjustable clasp as well. It certainly uses the latest Oyster clasp for securing it.

My point is that if the DD/DDII is/was the current flagship, then certainly this one takes the reigns with its added complexity and new movement.

You bring up valid points with re: the new Sky...but I still think the DD and DDII are still the flagship references in the lineup.

There are more than a few at high prices.
Is this a guess.
This puts it up there no doubt.
Agree.
Size means nothing.
True but those same people will own a yacht and i don't hear anyone bar Welshwatchman suggest it was the YMII that was the previous 'Top Boy'.

All in my opinion of course

Where said watch is placed and how it's worded in advertising is how i personally come to the conclusion it's the DD.

Oh one more reason it's NOT the flagship in my humble?

No platinum version, although i do feel that will surely follow soon enough.

GMT, DD, Daytona and DSSD are my choices for THE Rolex watch. No disrespect whatsoever intended to the venerable Sub/Sub-C and Sub ND. The DJ and DJII gets more than honorable mention though I am lacking in not owning either.
