I have been looking for a good -- affordable -- birth year watch for me (1972 -- forty years this year).

I saw this 1803 on another forum Linky....

I have asked the seller for his references (and he seems to be a prolific seller on several forums, and has online references). I have also asked for photos of the caseback (both sides) and the movement.

But I wanted to get thoughts here. How big of a deal is it that the dial is original but has aftermarket diamonds added? The price seems fair.

If everything is "as described", I wouldn't worry much about the modified dial. You can always replace the dial for not too much money. If you didn't want diamonds, you can always find another DD to buy. I'm not a fan of diamonds on a guy's watch, but IMO, diamonds on a Rolex dial are pretty understated. I also find the diamond markers to be a very functional hour marker.

Price is certainly not unreasonable. Aftermarket diamonds aren't for everyone, and thus reselling it someday would probably be a tad harder than a DD with nothing aftermarket, but if it doesn't bother you, go for it! As Steve mentioned, you can always get a dial of your choice -- assuming you service it soon after you get it anyway, you can have your local watchmaker put it in at the same time.

Price seems appropriate. I a not however, a fan of diamonds on the dial and as said above, will makes the watch a tad harder to sell.

There are a lot of older solid gold day date's and slid gold date musts out there on straps, their braclets stretched out long ago, for you to consider. It's always best not to jump at the first opportunity a search generates...IMHO.

I am not a 'Diamond' guy but she looks ok !
Price is really low.
I bought a Day Date 1810 some weeks ago.
No box, no papers, no nothing but for sale at 'know' seller.
And I was never, ever going to buy a gold watch . . .
I love it.
Good 'hunt'

It says -- and looks like -- authentic Rolex buckle.

I like the idea of a DD in 1972 basically looking like the current one.

I would love to find one with an intact bracelet -- but I won't at the price point I am looking for one at.

I don't love the diamonds -- but they are pretty muted and it doesn't kill the deal for me.

I would offer $3400. No higher if you wanted to change the dial. They can be had for that price.

For DD's sans bracelets, I think the prices regularly run from $3,500-$4,500. Nothing wrong with the listed price, IMO. Great looking watch.

Good Looking Day Date. I wouldn't worry about the 'added' diamonds to the original face. This was a common practice back in the day of the Non-Quicksets. I see them all the time. If they were added poorly then I would consider looking for a period correct dial. The nice thing about the older Day Dates, you can always change the dial ... and they look very classy on leather!
