Tropical?????? Really???

It's water damaged !!!?? Lets face it, a dial described as "tropical" is nothing more than lipstick on a pig applied by a seller in ninety percent of the cases.

Thoughts???? Educate me please if I am wrong.

I have seen water damaged dials claim to be tropical. Not accurate description IMO. The real deal is quite beautiful.

Most of whats called tropical these days sat in a watchmakers draw (as they dont throw things out) cause it was damaged by water or other things and when the boom came they were bought by dealer from the watchmakers installed in watches and bingo the words Rare, tropical spider cracked tiger eye etc were used. I say junk on most of these but there are some real brown tropicals that look nice.

Greek, gotta agree with you. Most of these tropical dials that are hawked as the greatest thing since "sliced bread" were one step away from the trash can. Most of them are definitely not for me, although I have seen a couple browns that were interesting.

not all but certainly some sellers try to pass of water damaged as tropical. There are genuine tropical faded brown dials too

Thank God- I'm glad that someone finally said something... I thought that I was the only one that thought that "Tropical dials" were water-damaged junk.

Some of the examples that I have seen make me wonder what the "innards" of the watch look like - you know, the parts that rust???

I must admit with some claimed tropics I don’t even begin to see the perceived colour change while others, like Ken’s DRSD , are absolutely drop dead gorgeous !!

Have to agree trouble today the Internet is a wonderful place for generating Rolex hype, and today many with little knowledge believe said hype as the gospel truth.

I do like the naturally faded dials and the ones where the texture of the finish has evenly changed over time, but rusted, stained and flaking. No thanks.
The spider dials I really don´t get the appeal, they just looked cracked and knackered.

good example...

But i really like this dial, I wouldnt want to pay mega money for it, but i think it looks good, not necessarily knackered like some you see, but interesting

My only concern with something like that is that would it deteriate further and what you see will stay like that for the foreseeable future or will you end up replacing the dial in a couple years?

But Jacek does have that one I would love to have: http://www.hqmilton.com/index.php/si...ial.._amazing/

Other than that if I were to ever consider "tropical" it would have to be an even fade that didn't compromise the indices or font whatsoever, especially gilt. Some are so "tropical" that you can't even make out the time yet go for a premium. I don't quite understand those?

Can I ask again, what causes a real "tropical dial".

I'm interested to know.

Exposure to light, would be my guess. I wonder how many "tropical" dials/bezels out there came out of someone's oven at 450 degrees for 5 minutes... Too many people out there trying to scam on us vintage collectors. It's a little unnerving.

I've got a late 50's tt TOG and a 1966 14k DJ that show no sign of going "tropical", at all. However, my first Rolex was a rootbeer bought new in 1973. The dial and bezel insert faded in well under 10 years to the point that neither resembled their new condition.
