This has always stuck in my craw...
All the Rolex watches have names, which I think is way cooler and better maketing than a simple number designation (although Panerai has it right by limiting to three digits, after that my dyslexia sets in).
But in terms of the awesome and mighty Explorer II, I've never understood why the genius' at Rolex gave it that name. I mean, it bears absolutely no resemblance to the original Explorer, the movement is completely different and it has always offered two more complications than the Explorer. Since the watch was 'designed' for speleologists, why not give it a more robust name like CaveDweller, or CaveMaster or SpeleMaster... If you ever look into Dowling's book, Rolex has legal claim to a plethora of watch names (prolly more than is listed there now), so why didn't they get more creative? Oops, I'm talking about Rolex... I forgot. I just don't get the connect between this speleologist's watch and the original Explorer. |

They treid HoleMaster, but the pimps were flocking to the AD's to buy them all up.

When you figure out Explorer II, then tackle Yacht-Master for me, will ya?
Even though I own one, I have no idea how the name fits with real life.....oh yeah, what John said.....this is Rolex, not real life. My bad. |

Well let me answer the second one Al. It simply means that the YM is good for timing yacht races, hence the bi-directional bezel to track the start of the race. Also, it is the master, since the watch is only fit for the captain, a man of class and distinction, like us.

I agree completely, the Explorer II is a misnomer in the line-up. The only other II is the GMT Master II, which makes sense because it's an evolution of the GMT Master. Like you say, the Exp. II bears little resemblence to the original, why the connection.
One of the names Rolex trademarked was "Frogman". I love that. Instead of a James Bond Submariner, I'd like to own a James Bond Frogman. Any watch with the word "frog" right in the name is my new favorite watch.

Hey they could have called it the "Watch for exploring Caves" would have been as imaginitive as "DateJust". I bet that one took years to think up.

Since we are talking about names
I always wondered why the Turn o Graph was named Thunderbird??
Been watching Commander in Chief as I was writing this, and I've got to say, Geena Davis is sooo HOT!! She's got my vote! |

I heard that was an unofficial name given because it was the watch of choice of the pilots of the Thunderbirds. Not 100% though.

Geena doesn't do it for me, but neither does the Daytona, so variety is the spice of life.

Funny, all the women around us thought she looked better in person, and all the men thought the opposite. In case you were wondering, she tried to make the US Olympic archery team in 2000. She wasn't a great shot, but the US womens side isn't very deep, so it looked like she came close when she didn't. We saw her at tournaments all over the US in 1999 and 2000........ |

I liked Geena when she was young but not much of a fan now (except for the fact that she's what, six feet tall? Yowsa!).
Rather than see Geena Davis in archery, I'm much rather see Lucy Liu on a training ride (cycling = spandex!). BTW, I agree with Micah that Frogman is a much cooler name for a dive watch. I kinda like CAVE DWELLER for the ExpII... more of a macho, cave-man kinda feel. |
