Red Sub dilemma

had my Red sub serviced last year & it came back looking stunning but on closer inspection the cyclops was a fraction out of line & the bottom edge of the case, next to the crown was a little sharp.....am i being a little fussy or would you guys get it sorted whilst under warranty still, obviously being vintage though it's not so straight forward as i understand every removal of the dial could damage to the edges etc

Chad.... If it's annoying you, which it sounds like it is.... get it looked at. There's nothing worse than a little niggle...... since in my experience, it only ever becomes a bigger niggle over time....

And your red is too good to not be as perfect as it can be.

Who was it serviced by? As my only hesitation would be if I felt they weren't perhaps up to the job.

I would take it back and have both issues fixed.
Unless now you don't trust them were it was serviced, then try and find another trusted watchmaker.
I know how you feel. When my new '61 gmt arrived in the mail, my crystal was off just a hair as well and the cyclops was not centered oner the date opening. I had to live with it for a year before I had it serviced.

Or you could install a tropic 19 crystal and you won't have that problem anymore.


Joking aside, you should have addressed. Let us know where you live, here or via pm, and some of us can point you to a trusted watchmaker.

RSC St James Sq serviced it last year, movement only & just the slightest of polishing, i've no experience in dismantling watches other than the throw away sort but my dial is nigh on perfect & just concerned whether another appointment on the operating table would do any damage. i remember when i left it for service the paperwork i received back with estimate mentioned the age of the dial etc & that edge damage may occur when dismantling...appreciate this may be them covering their back though.

I dislike situations like this. I'm a bit of a stickler, and that's OK. The fact is this, it's your watch and if something is annoying you, you should get it fix. I have a vintage from the 50s and am always concerned when it goes under the knife (bizarre analogy, I know), because I realize more damage can be done by taken the movement in and out etc. The truth is you have to have someone you trust take care of the issue. In short, if its bothering you get it fixed.

I think there is a lot of "covering their back" whenever Rolex state such disclaimers.... but nevertheless I hate having to be so specific in terms of what to touch and what not to touch.......

So I would have a word with someone like Steve Hale http://www.watchrestoration.co.uk/ or Bill Rice http://www.williamricewatches.com/ to see how much they would charge to fix it..... It may only be a relatively small fee.

I personally just prefer vintage specialists to work on my vintage watches and I always worry that someone at Rolex who is used to dealing with newer (sturdier and with replacement parts readily available) models day in day out will not perhaps be as careful or as experienced as someone like Steve or Bill.

I also fear a larger operations like Rolex will have bunches of trainee's testing themselves.... Probably completely unfounded......

I understand RSC always let their most experienced technicians work with vintage pieces so I wouldn't worry too much about a rookie mauling it to death

When I collected my then 52 yr old DJ from Bexley after servicing the guy who had worked on the DJ came from out the back & had a nice chat with me about the watch, which was very pleasant adding a nice touch.

I must admit I had pestered the life out of them previously about how they were gonna handle the watch (paranoia is heightened awareness, right?) the same as I did when they serviced my red sub, I know you did the same with yours Chad & there were no issues.

Do as you feel fit Chad, if it really bothers you have it adjusted, I'd let RSC handle things but thats just me, if you go independent thats fine too.

Please let us know how you decide.

The RSC in Kent pretty much said the same when I phoned them the other day for a bit of a chat...Doesn't really help when they say that there are no more red sub dials left if anything terrible was to happen during removal or refitting of the dial and it got damaged.

the cyclops lies just below level (at least it does to me) & the case edge whilst not razor sharp is sharp enough for concern, especially when compared to my other watches....wouldn't be so bad if i could trust my local AD to pass on the watch but their idea of a receipt of service was written on the back on an envelope with no mention of serial number
