Looking for a Graduation Present..

Well, I'm graduating from high school with honors next month. I am either wanting to upgrade with reef aquarium, or get a nice watch. Well I need some help looking for something as a "starter" watch.

I'm pretty sure if I go with a watch I would like to have a rolex. I need some suggestions with what to start with. I'm not looking for the most extravagant watch, but I want something decent. If you think I shouldn't get a rolex post whatever else you think I should look at.

Well the S.Steel watches hold there prices better in proportion to price paid over the gold versions. So any of the S.Steel range will be fine if you want a dress type watch then a Airking or DJ if you want a sports watch go for any of the Subs or GMTs.Myself have been keeping marines now for almost 20 years expensive hobby with salt and electricity prices as they are today below are a few pictures of my reef tank.

The main tank is 8ftX3ftX3ft half inch plate glass, now divided into two separate tanks with different filtration systems. One for corals and small reef fish, the other for large marine fish.Have only two large fish left now both well over 15 years old,but when they die will close the tank down. The tank is party built into the wall,in a long passage type narrow room, and gets very little natural lighting.

Living reef various corals both hard and soft.

Clown Trigger Fish about 15.inches body length.

Emperator Angel fish about 12.inches body length.

Are you going off to college? Obviously you can't take a reef aquarium with you. You can take a Rolex, but it's not a good idea.

If you aren't going off to college, I wonder what sort of economics affords either choice, if the future doesn't require a college degree.

Good luck.

Why is it a bad idea? I wore one all through college. I'd say a large number of my friends wore Rolexes, omegas, Breitlings etc. and I know of 0 issues in my 5 years at the University of Alabama. whats the difference in buying your son a nice watch or paying $2500 a semister to be in a fraternity? Kids leave to go to college in Range Rovers, BMWs, MBs, etc all the time. I personally don't have an issue with it and if you are afforded those luxuries and don't take them for granted and can be responsible with them good for you. I'd def suggest a SS sports model Sub GMT or Exp. Those that think a college kid wearing a Rolex is a strange site should visit a major college around campus.

Must be area-dependent. I went to University of Illinois at Chicago and I don't recall anyone wearing a Rolex, Breitling, Omega. I went to Rush Medical School in Chicago and never noticed anyone wearing a Rolex, Omega, or Breitling.

I've spent time at Georgia, Auburn, Ole Miss, and LSU. Seen them there. They are really around at Ole Miss but heck the students there go black tie to every football game. I will say it's more prevalent in the Greek system than the whole student body.

^Simple: theft, loss, destruction. College is a terrible place for luxury goods. But in deference to the thread question I will say no more on this subject, and we can discuss it elsewhere.

I wish OP all the best in making this decision.

This is how it was at both my undergraduate and my graduate schools. All my friends with a Rolex were in my fraternity, another fraternity, or a sorority.

I agree 100%. Just because kids are young, doesn't mean they can't have luxury goods. i prefer to give the younger generation things while i'm alive. At least i can see them enjoy it, right?

I would say a Sub-C is a great start, durable, practical, and sporty. If your children want to be more conservative, go with a datejust with roman letters. That is classic.

Not that unusual...

I would pick up a nice Rolex Submariner or Explorer. In fact, pre-owned might be the best bet.

Back in my day I had a Fossil and like it! LOL With that said If you can go for something that will grow with you. An explorer I is a great investment. Try even a GMT II. Congrats on graduation!

X2.

If you can buy it on your own, more power to you but with so many unknowns in your very near future, spending thousands on a Rolex might not be a smart choice. You definitely don't want it to be a liability. If you are expecting your parents to foot the the bill, look in the mirror and check yourself. If your car insurance and cell phone isn't in your own name you need to be thinking about other things besides an expensive timepiece. I could maybe see that as a college grad present...lawyer, doctor etc.

Regardless how and when, definitely a Submariner date and congrats on the grad

i don't think a SS datejust or a sub would be out of place at college in the least. I had friends in college that had rolex watches and I didn't ever think twice about it, but nobody had an all gold one, though

I was busy buying stuff that is heavy worn on a belt in doz younger years

What about a pre-owned Sub date or ND. I would suggest the ND 14060M as your first watch. Its wears great and has a classic look. A benifit over the aquarium is the Rolex can be sold down the road if needed for little to no loss and as a young man that may be something you need to do in the future.

An Omega Planet Ocean is also a great watch and they are easily found pre-owned.

X 3... Can't beat a sub.

I wore my TT all through college and NEVER took it off.... That is the key to having a nice watch I at school!

I'll say. The potential for theft and loss in the college environment is huge.

You won't appreciate it until you buy it with your own money not mom and dads. And if you're a student and have enough dough for a Rolex pay off your student loans. If you don't have any then your mom and dad can use the
Money to pay for your school!

Kids with rolexes are usually assumed to be wearing fakies anyway

That is a pretty bold statement. I can understand your feeling considering the cost associated with the item. However, appreciation for something has nothing to do with who pays for it, and someone assuming a Rolex is fake doesn't matter and could be a big plus in college.

Also, I appreciate things that have been given to me far more than things I have purchased myself... I do understand that we all may not see things the same, but I hope you can understand better that poeple who have been given Rolex's appreciate them just as a person who purchased it.

I disagree. As someone whose been gifted a watch and paid for them on my own the one gifted to me means much more to me than the ones I've paid for myself. I will never sell my DSSD because of what it stands for. There are other watches I like more than the DSSD but I'll save for them. What that watch means to me can't be replaced. I was fortunate enough to have parents that were able to give me nice thing but let me tell you that in no way means I dont respect them or wasnt responsible enough to have them. When I have children if I feel they are responsible enough when the time comes I won't hesitate to give them a nice watch or a nice car. Our neighbors kids both got brand new Range Rovers when they got their licenses and they are the most well behaved, courteous, well mannered kids I've been around in a long time. Their son always come over and helped me with yard work and takes care of our pool when we are out of town. Never complains, always happy, and honestly has told me before I've paid him too much for his help. A tenant we have has 3 kids that are the most ungrateful, back talking, cuss at their mom, just terriblly behaved children I've ever seen. I'm not talking some 18 yearolds either. They are 12-15. 2 of them are twins and my fiance purchased them a cake (as they have a hard enough time paying rent) and instead of a thankyou she got a "I hate vanilla cake why didn't we get an ice cream cake" smart a$$ comment. It goes both ways. Dont be so quick to judge.

Sorry for such a long ramble I've just been around this way of thinking a long time and it bothers me.

I think it's awesome that an 18 year old wants a mechanical timepiece that he will be able to cherish for years to come.

P.S No hard feelings intended with the pic just trying to lighten up the thread

I don't know about the fake comment but everything else X2. Me personally though, I would appreciate a gifted one just the same but I appreciate the value of a dollar and would be humbled by such an extravagant gift. Bringing to light the real reality that some members here have invested $50-100k just in their watches, it's fair to assume we all do not have the same take on the world we live in. As for me, I have worked since I was 13 and didn't own my first pair of Nikes till I was 12. I remember wearing shoes to school that my single mother had purchased at a yard sale. I saw my mom raise me and my sister alone, all while working during the day and going to school at night.

My childhood motivated me to be different and achieve the nicer things in life through hardwork, goal setting and an education. I purchased my first Rolex this year at the age of 30. Not a single person I know personally or in my family owns one. To me it is something very special that I have been able to acquire and I cherish the thought of one day passing it down to my oldest son....and hopefully getting another one That being said though, I would be turned off from the idea if I thought he was expecting it because that is not the type of child I have raised. But he definitely had to have a $130 pair of tennis shoes this year so I guess we shall see.
