"REAL" information is needed on Wilsdorf family, please!
I have seen a few postings in UK and Germany in other Forums, but still no reply (answer) from anyone.
Yet, there are many books but they all give a partial story. I know a lot about Hans Wilsdorf origin and his "career" (formation of Rolex) but I am becoming (like a few others it seems) interested in one small point of history. Hans Wilsdorf had a brother and a sister. The sister was called Anna Wilsdorf and she was born in Kulmbach, Germany on 10-Sept.-1882. I can assure you that there is no information on the Internet - hence, someone, may have the answer due to some research or paper work found. The question is - Where and when did Anna Wilsdorf get married? Thank you |

Rolex Founder Hans Wilsdorf was born 1881,he started his own watch company called Wilsdorf & Davis around 1906,Davis, his acquaintance later married Wilsdorf's sister around this time late 1906.And Hans Wilsdorf with his now brother-in-law Davis, first registered the name Rolex 1908.Not 100% sure where they got married, but think it was in England, because they moved back to Chaux-de-Fonds to register the Rolex name.Welcome to TRF by the
way we are all a very friendly bunch of guys

"news" move fast (ish)
No point hiding in cyber space - Yes, I am behind the site watchintime. How do you know, it is another issue (I am sure).
Thank you for kind words and thank you for brief history on good old Hans. Good old Hans became British at the end of 1911. Earlier that year he married "an Englishwoman" that cannot be found on any record anywhere (apart the marriage certificate). Paper work (from British police) points Hans entry to the UK in 1905. Office were indeed in Hatton Gardens and Holborn and records start from 1905 up to almost 1920 for the company Wilsdorf and Davies (a company, by the way, that actually never existed as a limited company). Should anyone have any records, it would be nice to see them as Company House in UK doesn't have them. Some records do point the marriage of Hans' sister (Anna) to a Alfred James Davis. Problem here, once again, there ARE NO RECORDS anywhere of Mr. Davis. So, did Anna marry him or not? It was not in England (if it was, there are no records ?? ). Why would they marry elsewhere? Did Mr. Davis go to Switzerland to marry Anna? Indeed Rolex was registered in Switzerland in 1908 and in UK in 1912 - did Davis travelled a lot too? Considering that Hans stayed always in very poor accomodations while in UK and all over the place (mainly in Kent) a more accurate understanding of who was Mr. Davis (assuming he was a real person) could be established by the "assertions" (in many books) that Anna married him. Once we know where and when they got married, we can finally find out who Mr. Davis really was. I have spent 6 months researching the British Archives and, while a lot of nice and interesting information was found, there are a few loopholes in Hans early years. I hope you share my enthusiasm and I think it is only fair for everyone to see and find out the whole truth. Some of you may know the right people in the right places to come out with the right answers. ""PS - sorry for long user name, but I really cannot stand ebay !! "" |

As for chat sites, I am not aware of any. We used to have a chat room here, but no one used it so it atrophied. You can try PM'ing but I know that's not quite the same.

Hiya Max,
First off a big welcome to this wonderful forum. Hope you enjoy your stay here. Secondly, I don't really like your username, but I do admire it 'cause it shows the same animosity toward e-bay which I harbour....and that's a good thing - can't stand those ba$tards!!! Anyway, have a great time on TRF. Cheers - JJ
